I installed longer wheel studs yesterday since this and this would not pass tech or even be safe to drive on...

But I think I either buggered up the end of one of the studs or something because now it attempts to cross thread lugnut I put on there. I tried to have one that I thought was straight driven on and it cross threaded and almost ripped all the treads out of the lugnut. It was getting dark and cold last night before I could look it over too much but I think I just buggered up the first few threads and filled it with damaged parts of the broken lugnut. I was thinking of just hitting it with a wire wheel to clean up the threads, but not sure if I should do that or if there are other things that can be done...

 

Use a M12 X 1.5 die.

 

This might be a dumb question, but how will the die fix it if it is the first thread that is messed up, wont it just start trying to cut mor threads and then mess the stud up?

 

A messed up first thread is always tough but as long as your keep the die square to the stud you have a chance. I've also seen this tool; don't know if it works but in theory is solves the issues with the first thread being messed up http://www.griotsgarage.com/catalog.jsp?&SKU=92201

 

Well since it's dark out by the time I got home, and I don't have a garage I couldn't look at it, but after looking at the cross threaded lugnut I think the stud might be decent and just has crap from the threads ripped out of the lug lodged in it's threads or something...

These pics don't show it well, but the first few wraps of thread are almost wiped out and there is some of the thread just hanging in there...

any way you can reshoot thoes pics in macro mode?
there is probally a little flower icon on your camera. if you go into that mode, it will allow it to focus much closer, and we might be able to see what you are talking about.

 

It's my wifes camera so I just point and click, but I will look into that when I get home tonight, and if there is still daylight I will try to get a shot or 2 of the stud too...

I hate to ask the obvious question...but...Are you sure your studs and nuts are the same thread? Are they both metric or standard?

They are the same, and were interchangable because the lugs were on the old studs and the new studs had my old lugs thread on when I pressed them on...

After looking at them it almost looks like some of the lug threads ripped out and got embedded in the studs threads.

 

yes, a wire wheel will be fine

you may need to take a file to the threads as well, to clean it up so you can thread a nut on
