Can I grind the brake booster to make room for SLP CAI?
Can I grind the brake booster to make room for SLP CAI?
You know that little metal piece that sticks out between the CAI tubes on the SLP and I imagine it gets in the way with every CAI......can I grind it or something? SInce I installed my vortec intake elbow it shifted just enough to make it grind against the CAI and make a HORRIBLE noise like something is broken in the engine
Thanks for any help!!

Re: Can I grind the brake booster to make room for SLP CAI?
The brake booster is against the firewall, your CAI shouldn't be near it. If you're talking about the ABS unit then I wouldn't touch it if I were you. Don't mess with the brake lines unless you don't want to stop
Re: Can I grind the brake booster to make room for SLP CAI?
Yeah thats it the ABS duh......well, if anyone knows the little **** that stick out I am talking about hopefully I can do something about it
Maybe that is why I had an ABS light, that thing was bumping against it. I cut an inner tube from a bike and put it around that thing and where the CAI is mounted, hopefully that will quiet it but it still is making noise when starting the car and under heavy load from 1st gear at a stop

The **** you are talking about, does it look kinda like a bleeder screw?
Don't mess with that or you won't be able to bleed the brakes if you need to.

Re: Can I grind the brake booster to make room for SLP CAI?
I took the abs unit off about 3 months ago. Spent about $5 on fittings and $5 on the brake fluid that I flushed the system out with. The brakes feel better and more responsive than ever. Took a lot of the clutter out of the engine compartment too. I've never heard of anyone regretting taking off the abs.....and no, there was nothing wrong with my abs before I took it off, I just didn't want it and I don't drive the car in the winter....

I drive in the winter, and use the ABS not alot but I do....my light was on the other day and I smoked up the tired stopping too hard
Re: Can I grind the brake booster to make room for SLP CAI?
If you decide to grind something off to make the cai fit and it screws something up, let me know...I have my abs unit in the garage still and its only got 40K on it.
Re: Can I grind the brake booster to make room for SLP CAI?
Wouldn't removing the ABS be similar to running drag skinnies on the front if an accident were to ever happen? What I mean to say is that if you were to get into an accident that was not your fault, but a good inspector found that the ABS had been removed -could you be found at fault? It seems to me you could. Additionally, I'm pretty sure that the insurance rate you're paying is for a car with ABS, Air Bags, et cetera. Messing with them I would assume would make your insurance company pretty pissed post accident.
Just a thought, and probably an incorrect one at that.

Re: Can I grind the brake booster to make room for SLP CAI?
wouldn't the best CAI for your car be the 96 SS hood and filter assy? Why hack your car when you can install something that fits and looks much better from the outside. If your modifying your car to get the best performance money shouldn't be a factor.

Money, got the SLP CAI a few years ago cheap and I have better things to spend money on than a hood and ram air filter assembly....like my busted up front fender, or my future transmission rebuild since I now have some chatter when off the clutch

We don't have any vehicle inspections in michigan either.....
May sound silly, but the reason I took it out was because I couldn't stand the way it looked, and I like the feel of regular brakes over abs brakes.....and if I want to lock-em up I can, if I want to stop fast I can do that too.
Re: Can I grind the brake booster to make room for SLP CAI?
Couldn't you heat the area that is rubbing on the CAI and push it in (indent)slightly so it doesn't rub. Maybe a BIC lighter or propane torch heat the plastic alittle to soften it and push in (being careful not to melt it or push through). I would not recommend messing with the brake system in any way unless you are going to run off road only.

Good suggestion I will maybe try that, I seemed to have minimized it just now by shifting the CAI and wedging rubber tubing on the mount, no more rubbing it seems for now. If it rubs again I will try to heat it and see what happens, thanks again
