Camaro Cop Target?

Hey guys, i am about to get my first car and i kind of want an early 4th gen Z28, because of price, V8, and size, mod friendly , etc. But my parents think it is gonna be a cop target because it is gonna be a young guy in a sporty car and the cops wil be on my butt. But i think it is a good car because it is small, so i can't fit a ton of people in it and it looks good. What do you guys think? Will i be a cop target? Or would i be ok in it?

You're young... you are a cop target either way. If you do get the car, drive it sensibly and make sure you do common sense stuff like making sure all of your lights properly work, and you wear a seatbelt, ect. so you don't give the cop a reason to pull you over.

Re: Camaro Cop Target?

ummmm. well ill tell you this... i had a 93 Z-28, didnt get pulled over once in it. drove it for like 6 months then boom, luck ran out and i slammed it through a ditch and into a tree. alright so i got super lucky and was able to get an even nice, newer and ballsier car. ive been driving it since last thanksgiving about, it is much louder, but it really doesnt matter, as long as your not a jackass they wont listen to you. ive been pulled over 3 times, once for speeding, the other times, like front plate and bull****. id say overall for a 17 year old i am very fortunate and dont have much trouble at all. no radar detector, i just watch out for them all the time. i pretty much drive like theres a cop around everywhere and look all the time for them. ive noticed that when i look at them, they never seem to be looking back, unless of coarse im doing something retarded. thats my 2 cents, personally i say if you can handle it as a young man, then so can everyone else, cops, neighbors, relative blah blah blah. i get lots of looks and talk and the neighbors cant beleive my dad let's me race my car at the track but don't make a fool of yourself and you will actually make them look stupid for doubting you.

Re: Camaro Cop Target?

If you dont drive like a typical teenager in a sports car, you shouldn't have a problem.

When I was 16 and got my first Camaro, I got pulled over alot because I drove like a douche. Im still pretty young (21) and drive a flashy, red, loud car. I only get pulled over if I deserve it. In my 5 years of driving, Ive never been pulled over just because I'm young and driving a sporty car.

Re: Camaro Cop Target?

I guess ill put my sense in here, it helps that im a Cop(Military Police) and an F-body owner. Just dont be an idiot in your car. I will be honest if i see a corvette or a camaro vs. a minivan speeding guess which one im gonna look at a little more closely. Now seeing that your from Minnesota, and probably from a small town, (Im a fellow northerner...Maine) there are probably alot more Pickups and Minivans than sports cars running around on the road so naturally you are gonna catch the police eye. My best advice... yes get the car...but... realize that you live in Minnesota and a torqy rear wheel drive car isnt the best in the harsh winters of the North... I would look into buying a beater pickup or something fwd for the winter. JMHO.

Re: Camaro Cop Target?

cops think that because you have a flashy car you might be a drug dealer, or got the car from your parents and have no respect for the law. If you drive a f-body they will always watch you, especially if you've done alot of appearance modding like racing stripes or big lettering. Get used to it, dont give them a reason.

Re: Camaro Cop Target?

It's simple, if you drive it responsibly, no problem. But act like an idiot, expect to get treated like one.

I've put headers and the Loudmouth on my SS, and the town in live near is notorious for cops looking to ticket someone. I've driven through town numerous times, obeying the speed limit, etc., and never had a probelm despite the car being loud.

Re: Camaro Cop Target?

It's a sports car and you're young, it's going to draw attention, no matter what. Just be cool and don't do anything stupid and you should be all right. I've had the local police follow me home right to my driveway on more than one occasion . . . but I was expecting it too happen

I've only been pulled over once in my Camaro and I wasn't charged, but last summer I had one of the local cops tell me when I was stopped at a RIDE program check point that he wasn't going to give me ticket, but I don't think he's stationed here any more

I can promise you this though, if I had this car when Iw as 16 I'd have lost my licence or killed myself in it

Re: Camaro Cop Target?

I'm from Minnesota also

my last car was a 96 2.0 non-turbo eclipse..... got pulled over 4 times... twice in Sartell (if you have ever been there), every time i got pulled over i got a ticket, 7-8 over on at least 3 of the tickets. keeping in mind this was a stock unmodified mid 16 second car

after the speeds started coming off the record (no change in driving i just started to drive my truck, which BTW i got a warning doing 85 in a 65 being late on my way to work one day) i got ythe camaro. had it about a year and no real big problems. i have been pulled over, but they have not hated me like when i was driving the fast little import no tickets yet (knock on wood)

Re: Camaro Cop Target?

I've had 2 Camaros, both of them illegal in a handful of ways (tint, no cat, etc). The first one was purple pearl metallic with 5% window tint, and I didn't get anything from cops, not even pulled over once, and I was an idiot with that car. It's not like they can tell how old I am with the tint though.

Well my current one is red with 10% tint, and I have been harassed by a cop in this one. I was pulling out of my parking spot at Walmart (rolling out, absolutely nothing wrong) and a cop pulls up beside me in a new unmarked car (usually I recognize them) and motions for me to roll down my window. So I roll it down and he blows up on me for my window tint and tells me if he ever sees me again and I still have the tint he's going to give me a ticket. I guess he was just having a bad day, but I'm not changing my window tint.

Re: Camaro Cop Target?

I would say that cops do pay more attention to them. I have been pulled over a couple times just for the heck of it. I dont know if they were having a bad day or what. But I had a cop call me a F*****g retard one night when I was in the camaro. He was definatly having a bad day, and I definatly did not do anything wrong to make him pull me over. Eventhough I know they are suppost to have reason to pull sombody over.

Re: Camaro Cop Target?

I got pulled over all the time in my 73 camaro, I mean like at least once a month. With this car though I have actually never been followed or targeted even though I have a host of illegal stuff like hids and loud exhaust. I think they may assume the newer cars have a more adult-oriented circle of drivers (I know I look a lot older now [22] then when I was 17 and had to shave driving my old car)

One thing to remember, especially considering you live in a smaller town, is that cops are around even when they aren't on duty. Blow by one at a buck twenty on the freeway when he's on his way to the grocery store and you'll be damned sure he's going to remember you next time. I used to go pretty quick down one street all the time in my old car and just found out that three local cops live on it.
