A/C Compressor Questions..

Last summer I refilled my A/C system cause it wasnt working.. Took two cans.. The first can got the compressor going.. The second can got it cold.. After I filled it I could hear a psshh sound very lightly.. I poured soapy water on it and could never see any bubbles.. at the end of the year the A/C quit one day while I was driving.. I pulled over and the front of the compressor where the pulley is was ice covered.. the air no longer worked? Did I blow the front seals? Could the schrader valve be bad too? How do I check.. I was told by my friend to just buy a can and see if it comes right out the front of the compressor but I don't wanna waste 8.99 per can at autozone.. And Ideas...?

If there was ice on the compressor, then that is where you have a leak. Keep in mind that a leak near the compressor may freeze on the compressor as well. Personally, I would pull it apart to see if there are any obvious leaks.

Re: A/C Compressor Questions..

Best bet to pull a vacuum and see if it will hold it. I'd say the front seal let go, not a cheap repair any way you look at it. There may be a high pressure cut out on the back top of the compressor, these tend to leak after converting to R134 but don't think it would frost the front of the compressor. Be glad it's not the original R12, really big money there.
