Brake Cleaner and Painted Calipers
Brake Cleaner and Painted Calipers
My brakes are really noisy right now and before I painted the calipers, the noise would go away for a couple of weeks when I sprayed them with brake cleaner.
Is it safe to use cleaner on painted calipers or will it ruin the paint? Oh, and what about if some gets on the chrome wheels, will they be ok?

I guess I will try it somewhere where its not too noticable on the rear calipers.
Re: Brake Cleaner and Painted Calipers
Are you using CLEANER or disc brake QUIET stuff?
What I've always used was this stuff that comes in a small jar, it's kind of thick and the cap has a brush on it, you take off the pads and brush this stuff onto the BACK of them.
I believe the noise is caused from the pads creating a certain frequency that causes the calipers to ring or some BS like that.
The stuff works so whatever.

Re: Brake Cleaner and Painted Calipers
I think it depends on the particular break cleaner you use. At my work we have two kind something that comes in a red and black can and one that comes in a green and white can. the both say break cleaner but the green and white can will litteraly eat the paint off the car. We had to repaint a customers fender cus a lil bit got on it ate the clear coat totaly off and get down on to the paint. We still use it but only for cleaning massive ammounts of oil from the bottom of the engine for finding oil leaks. The other stuff that we use noramly doesn't do anything to paint. But like I said I think it depends on the brand of break cleaner that you use some are stronger that others I think you should experiment on just a scrap peice of metal. Sand, clean, and prep and finnaly paint it both side of it and let it dry. Take the can of break cleaner that you normaly use and spray it on it and see what happens. Only thing I can really tell you.

As far as the noise, I have tried that thick stuff you put on your pads, but it only works for a little bit also. I am going to get some Hawk or EBC greenstuff pads in a month or two. That and I want to get replacements for those thin metal pieces that go on the top and bottom of the pads.
