Stupid questions but want to make sure. I just did my first oil change on mynew bought 99 SS. I'm using Mobil 1 and WIX filter. The manual says fill with 5.5 qts of oil but i noticed on this web site some say 5qts even. Hope i didn't add too much?
also changed air filter with Wix paper cartridge. The Local auto shop said it is better than K & N if I don't know how to oil and maintain properly...makes sense?

never mind, I found more info when I searched under oil! manual says 5.5 and some change with 6! I had no idea it could take that much of a variance without causing leaks!

As for the oil, put 5 qts and drive it till it's warm. Check the level and add if you need..... better to be just a tad low then top off vice over filling.

thanks! already added 5.5 but will check once it is run a little. this LS1 is so much easier than my other cars! Plug and filter are easy access.

 

Oil and air filter changes are very easy on LS1s, its just everything else that is difficult.

 

I always put 6 in, even with the stock size filter.

 

Most run 6 qts if it sees a track in order to maintain oil pressure in hard turns....

 

Does anyone ever use the dipstick to check the level, instead of what someone else says? Go by the manual first, dipstick second.

No offense to anyone, but I do see a lot of questions asking simple answers.

Anywho, I put 5-6qts in mine.
