Basic Mods on 98LS1...New Here, Advice please..!!
Hey everyone just wanna say what's up... First i just wanna say that i'm currently saving up $$ for a camaro, it's definetly gonna be the 6spd Ls1..most likely a 1998 if it has low miles...if not maybe newer..but they're more $$ for the most part.
At first i wanted a mustang, either a 95 5.0 or earlier or a newer 99 w.4.6 but then i was reading up on mods and such, and they really don't give you what you put into them for a stang...unless you go blower and built engine/tranny etc. I do love both cars, but always preferred the ls1 for the slightly bigger engine..i don't care if it's alittle heavier then the stangs also.
Mods, now i've really thought about alot of routes, like supercharging/turbo/nitrous etc... And honestly the conclusion i came to is that i really won't be doing to many mods. I want to just do the basics. Now i know 98 ls1 manuals hit like 13.5 in the 1/4 stock, so what would the following list of mods do to the 1/4 times...
-gears, i'd like big ones, like over 3.73....possible 4.10's (whats common gears for you guys..? i got ford #'s stuck in my head lol)
-better/bigger maf and throttle body....full cai with kn filter
-full exhaust, as in headers, high flow cats and NO mufflers...yes i want it LOUD lol. I know this will take away alittle torque cause of backpressure...but shouldnt it give some hp up top..?
-pulleys
-updated ignition system like msd or whatnot, colder plugs-or whatever is needed to get some hp out of it.
-chip/tune etc to give more fuel (if that's possible).
-some weight reduction, like light carbon fiber hood, no back seat/nothing in the trunk at all except for fix a flat...lol. let's say 80-100lbs reduction total.
-good set of tires (no hp their lol....)
Now overall how much actual rwhp/rwtq would that give...? I think i read somewhere that a 98LS1 6spd dyno's at like 285rwhp or so...the torque is over 300rw i'm sure.
PS, do you think i can sneak into the 12's with those mods..?

Re: Basic Mods on 98LS1...New Here, Advice please..!!
Yeah but then i'd need a tune, full exhaust to make it all worthwhile wouldnt i..?
Correct me if i'm wrong, but even a low boost sc would need other mods, especially exhaust to let the air out as fast as it's coming in.
Besides that, the mods i listed, what 1/4 times would that hit and rought how much hp you think..?

Yes good drivers get into the 13.5 in 1/4 mile time with the ls1 (345 hp)
-yeah plenty of people run 410 with the 6 speeds... they will help our alot in the quarter common numbers are 323 342 373 410 411
-the bigger Throttle body is a a waste the air induction flow pretty well... the intake opening is like 78 mm and the throttle body it like 75ish? just get it ported for cheap... the MAF is a waste to, just descreen it and you will be fine. you dont really need to upgrade until you do big Heads/Cam set up
-Yeah deffinatly will give you more HP in the top end. Most people set ups are as follows X brand of LT headers, Off Road Y pipe, and their choice of exhaust
-pulley is like 5rwhp but i have heard good and bad... some people experience problems and others dont
-i dont know jack **** about ignition, i'm learning too
-Yeah the tune is a good idea to get optimal gains from the LTs, ORY, and Cat-Back
-I take out my spare and everything... i like the back seat because i can take mroe than another person with me though.
-tires help a crap load on our cars... i see tons on people with Nitto 555R drag radials and those appreently hook up real good... ill be investing in them soon
naw man LS1 6 speeds dyno at ~315 rwhp and A4 ~300
we have 345-50 at the crank
if you are a decent driver you will deff be in the 12s

"naw man LS1 6 speeds dyno at ~315 rwhp and A4 ~300"
when the LS1s were still in production some guys were getting these numbers, but for the most part they were the exception...not the rule. and even more so for the older versions of the LS1. 98-00 were more consistently dynoing 290-300 with the m6 and slightly less with the auto.
as stated gears will really help in the 1/4mi, but the rear end isn't all that tough...so gears, sticky tires and hard launches can easily demolish the rear quick. some are lucky and last a while...some are not.
as stated the maf is best left stock...not much to gain from modding or replacing it.
porting the tb gives minimal gains, but it's free or cheap so it's not a big deal. buying a new one is pointless...unless you like wasting money.
the lid will be the best intake upgrade, as would a SSRA if it's not a ram air equipped car already (ss or ws6).
for the exhaust, i would do some longtube headers, and ditch the cats and just install some 2.5" true duals. an X-pipe with a pair of bullet mufflers will give great hp gains and sound killer. low end shouldn't drop much, and it will flow very well up top.
the ignition on the LS1 is fantastic from the factory. with one coil per cylinder, there isn't much need for a bigger system, least not untill you're into some insane h/c setup with 500+hp
a computer tune is a good idea, more power in the a/f adjustments, better drivability with lower fan temps and you'll be able to program for the gears as well as delete codes.
weight reduction is good, but for the cost of something like a cf hood...you could gain alot more with other parts. if you really want a lighter hood, stick with a fiberglass hood.
for hp estimates, most guys will dyno between 330-350 to the wheels with the following major mods:
lid, LS6 intake, LT headers, high flow catback and an ECM tune

Re: Basic Mods on 98LS1...New Here, Advice please..!!
well it isn't really wrong info...there were alot of cars that did dyno that amount.
but i think too many people refer to those numbers as average...when they are not.
cause then people get irritated when they dyno with a lid and catback and only get 320hp....when they were told they should dyno 315hp stock.
but anyway...dyno numbers are nice for internet racing....track numbers are the real deal.

Re: Basic Mods on 98LS1...New Here, Advice please..!!
Thanks a bunch guys.
You see i don't really wanna setup this car to kill it everyday. Even with the basic mods i listed, i would take it to the track once just to see what it will run, this car would be a daily driver aswell.
-I still got alot to read up on, thanks for making me aware of the tb thing. BTW how are 98 camaro's Radiator/cooling systems..? I'm guessing they stand up to abuse right..? Maybe that should see an upgrade..?
PS, if you can comment on the 1-4th shift, i believe that's programmed to get you good gas mileage, but can you shift normally at low speeds...? Or what would it take to take that off..?

Re: Basic Mods on 98LS1...New Here, Advice please..!!
not to sure what you are talking about on the shifting things but on the cooling system, i have seen no posts and i have had no expiences w/ problems with the cooling system... people on here recoment a 24,000 tranny cooler to increase the life of your tranny.... they are like 54 bucks or something like that
Re: Basic Mods on 98LS1...New Here, Advice please..!!
no real need for a tranny cooler with a manual trans i don't think.
the cooling system is pretty good. although unlike the cam driven waterpump in the LT1, the waterpump in the LS1 is belt driven. there is now an electric waterpump on the market that is said to free up some power. it's pricey...so not many run it. it's not a required upgrade, but it could be useful. specially since it runs consistent flow at idle or high rpm. which could help keep the engine cooler in traffic or at the track.
as for the shift...you mean the "skip shift". which forces you to shift from 1st to 4th under specific conditions. something like less than 30% throttle and between 1500 and 2500 rpm...or something like that.
you can have it programed out of the computer, or you can buy the $20 "skip shift eliminator"....or you can do the $1 version from radio shack (actually less...but you have to buy a bag of resistors...but you only need one). check out the "how to" page on my website in the signature..it shows you how to do the mod.
