Is it bad to drive with a missfire?
I am picking up a parts car and it drives but it misses on one cylinder. I was going to drive it home because I don't have free access to towing equipment. But, can I drive 300 miles with a miss? I don't really care about the engine afterwards because my project has a good one.
If the misfire is spark related and that cylinder is still getting fuel it will burn in the cat. converter causing it to over heat and most likely damage it. If you dont have cats no problem. If you do and plan on keeping them unplug the injector on the cylinder that is misfireing for the 300 mile trip.
The engine is a 93 vortec 6 cylinder which uses a single batch-fired injector feeding 6 poppet nozzels located at the intake ports. So, I can't disconnect one of the poppets. I was going to bring some sparkplugs to see if that is the problem.
I'm not keeping the engine or exhaust. While it would be nice to sell them in better shape, I don't think the cost of a rented truck and trailer outweighs the lost value for resale.
