anyone convert to manual windows?

seems like my arm has 100x the cranking power of these dinky window motors. I've gone through 3 on the drivers side and 2 on the passenger side. Is it hard to convert? Would it be worth it?

Im not sure of everything you would need to do this mod; although it may be helpful to refer to these two threads for reference before you go about doing the swap.

There's a company that makes a power window motor with a lifetime warranty. I can't remember their name, but I think it's ATI or AFI. They're in my car.

As much as we hate when something mechanical breaks down, power windows are pretty convenient. Just think how much it would suck to be cruising along with your windows down and all of a sudden you encounter a downpour. You can either press a button or pull over.

Re: anyone convert to manual windows?

My first Camaro was a '94 V6 car with manual windows. I loved to ride with the windows down, and I was constantly getting caught in the rain or freezing my butt off because I didn't want to pull over and roll up the windows.

Re: anyone convert to manual windows?

I dunno, I was usually in a hurry to get somewhere, and didn't want to face pulling over and then fighting my way back into traffic. Rain, of course, I had to pull over, but it still sucked.

Kinda funny that my Z28 daily driver has all power, but my '88 project car has manual windows....that's gonna suck big time.

Re: anyone convert to manual windows?

I'm a shorter person, for me, running 70 down the highway and trying to lean all the way across the car, keep the wheel steady, and keep my eyes on the road always seemed really stupid and dangerous. For me to reach the passenger window crank, I had to lean over so far that I couldn't easily see the road.

Re: anyone convert to manual windows?

if you've gone through that many window motors, they're not the problem. Obviously something is binding causing them to overwork and burn out. Besides, just get a lifetime replacement from autozone. Once you've replaced it the right way, its only a 20 min job the next time. Replacing your power windows with manual just because the motor went out, is like jamming your toe on the step and amputating your leg.
