Ac maintenance questions?

Ac maintenance questions?
SO I have a few questions.
My car is 6 years old and a FL car with 62k, so getting around the time when crap breaks.
Is there anything I can do to upkeep and maintain the AC system? Or is it just runs fine then breaks and is expensive?
Also how do you know when to refill it? Can you just pick up a normal refill thing and add as needed if its not fully empty?
Also any cabin air filter or something you can change? My AC smells a little funky at start up. Just looking to make it back to normal if possible.

Just keep the condensor clear, it's a sealed system. Won't hurt to put gauges on it to check if you feel it's not cooling right - a leak causing a pressure drop will be obvious and result in no cooling. If it's smelling "funky" at start up something else is going on, maybe check the air box - no cabin air filter I'm aware of.

you can get a set of hoses at any part store, they are pretty simple to read just make sure you hook them up on the low pressure side (thick line) and your compressor has to be running. As for the smell, i have no clue good luck with that.
