ABS Inop light

My ABS Inop light keeps coming on randomly. Every once in a while, when I'm slowing to a stop, the brake pedal goes firm and it feels like the car isn't going to stop, and the low traction light comes on. All wires to sensors seem to be in tact. I don't know if its a relay or what else could be causing this?

Re: ABS Inop light

I had a problem with the ABS kicking in just as the car was about to stop under non-locking conditions, and causing extended stopping distances. I traced the problem to the rear axle mounted sensor (which was a Strange sensor, not a GM sensor). It appeared the sensor spacing adjustment to the reluctor ring (adjustable on the Strange 12-bolt) was not correct. I would suspect that metal particle buildup on the stock sensor might cause similar problems. Might be worth pulling the rear sensor and cleaning it.

If you have the EBCM (electronic brake control module) scanned it will tell you why the ABS INOP light is coming on. Usual prblem is a fualty wheel speed sensor.

All this assumes you have ABS but not TCS, with the dual rear sensors. But we have no way of knowing that because you have not included any basic info about your vehicle. Why not add a "Signature" showing the basics - year, model, engine, trans and any major mods. That allows people to respond with more accurate information.

I have ABS. I have a 1996 Camaro 3.8L V6 5-Speed. Where can I get the EBCM scanned? I'm not sure where it is located either.

GM can do it with a Tech-2. A good brake shop may have a high end scanner that can read the EBCM.
