94Z PASS Key Problem
94Z PASS Key Problem
I'm not sure if this is the right forum, rather than the computers and diagnostics, but here goes.
94 Z28, Auto, bought over internet. I was overseas when I sealed the deal and had the car delivered from Miami to my stepson in Texas. There were a few cosmetic things that I knew about and overall the car was a good deal. Stepson reported the car ran good, no starting problems, but drank gas. Only problem he had was the shifter cable broke. Took it to a Cottman's transmission shope where I had good service before and had cable replaced. Overall the car is in really good shape, good looking for 112K miles, and got a good deal.
So now I'm home from overseas and occasionally the starter won't turn over, the solenoid doesn't click and the SECURITY light stays on after I try and start. If I go out later in the day, sometimes it starts and runs OK for the rest of the day. Just went out this AM and the same thing, no starter, no solenoid, and SECURITY stays on even after removing the key.
I checked the pellet and it was reading the right resistance for a 8 pellet. Trying the least troublesome solutions, I went to the local GM dealer and had another key cut. No luck, put the new key in and no starter, no solenoid, and SECURITY stays on.
1. Remember I said that the shifter cable was replaced? Could the safety switch be the problem? Put shifter in neutral to no avail. I thought about trying to jump the safety switch but haven't done that yet.
2. Could the steering column not be reading the PASS key properly? I read shoebox's website about jumping the PASS key system but don't want to have to go that far yet. Is there anything in the steering column that could be worn out and repaired/replaced fairly easily? I thought about getting a steering column from a salvage yard, but wasn't sure that would be successful. Dealer will probably charge $1000 to replace column.
One thing I noticed was that its gotten cold in the morning lately, like 50 F. When it seems to start OK, its warmer outside. Once it eventually does start, I've driven it all afternoon without the start problem recurring, but then its been in the 70s in the afternoon.
Any help appreciated.

Re: 94Z PASS Key Problem
My 94Z started doing that at about 100k miles. It got progressively worse until sometimes I would have to wait 20 minutes to start the car. If the light comes on, it won't let you start it for five minutes. So if you try and the light comes on don't even try to start it again until the light goes off about five minutes later.
The problem as I remember (this was about 4 years ago I got it fixed) is the ignition module. I asked someone at the dealer and they knew just what the problem was because it's common with this system. It's about $100 for the module as I remember and takes about 2 hours to put in. You take the cover off the steering wheel, and dig in to the column a little and replace it. You'll need a puller. It actually might be a lot easier, if you don't care about having the security feature, to just pay for a new tune. E-mail one of our resident tuners and ask them to eliminate the security feature (I expect they can; they can eliminate skip shift). They charge about $100 for a tune. You'll have to buy a cable too which is about $100. But you won't have to do any work, and you'll have a new tune. Buy the unlimited e-mail tune for like $30 more and you'll have unlimited tunes.
