How long to break in new bearings?

I have new main and rod bearings in my LT1 and want a second opinion as to how long they need to break in. I was told to take it easy for 1000 miles but that is easier said than done. A guy was right on my tail yesterday with a pickup truck so I..well, you can guess at the rest of the story. But how long to break in new bearings and what's the recommended driving? Keep it below 3000 RPM's?

we let mine go through about 3 heat cycles...let it heat up for 30 minutes and then break it in like you stole it...less than 2 miles on it before it saw 6k...been running sound for 15k

Man so I could have lit my tires up the first time out of the driveway like I wanted to after having it on jackstands for 6 weeks, hauling a jack and tools back on the bus, working every Saturday, but I've been itching for another week, driving like a woman because I was misinformed.
Hey, this website is great isn't it. I should have checked here sooner.
