Question 60,000 mile service...

Is there such a thing as a 60,000 mile service and so on for 98Zs? I just follow the car guide that came with the car changing oil, tranny fluid, coolant, differential fluid every so often and that's about it. Is there something serious I'm missing just doing regular service?

I would just follow the owner's manual. The engineers that determined when the maintenance needed to be done are more knowledgable about the car than anyone on this board.

If you brought it into service every time the owners manaul said, your monthly bill for the car would be higher than the car payment itself.

Bleh...if you've been staying regular with your fluid changes, "milestone" services don't mean squat.

I think it is more for the casual car owner who doesn't maintain their car as well as they should so they use the xx,xxx miles as a way of scaring them into taking care of their cars.

I guess they are right, just change the fluids when the car starts having problems. That preventative maitenance theory is just a bunch of bull sht

Preventative maintainance is BS? It can cost you more if you wait till something breaks than to try to prevent it from happening. With that said, I don't agree with you have to change, inspect, replace, or do whatever with whatever at xx,xxx miles.

Ya, I just notice with lots of other vehicles, they have 30,000; 60,000; and so on services and I didn't see one in my manual so I guess it doesn't matter. But I'm just paranoid since I'm not a gearhead and may forget to get some other items checked that may be obvious to others...

How is preventative maintenance bs? Everything you do to your car falls into the preventative maintenance category, from checking and changing fluids all the way down to washing your car.....Think about it. And for the original topic i have my owns schedule for maintenance.

You guys are missing the point of Joe Bellman's posts completely. His first response was "follow the manual". When someone suggested that the maintenance suggested in the manual is not needed, required because the manufacturer wants to make money, etc.... he sarcasticlly stated "That preventative maitenance theory is just a bunch of bull sht".

If you havent changed the fuel filter yet I would do that, if you havent serviced the tranny yet I would T-tech it and then change the filter. The rear diff is your call, being as weak as everybody knows the 10-bolts are it wouldnt hurt. Your looking at around 200-250 bux for all that, if you have someone to do it. The trannys in these cars are at a very high risk to give way so I wouldnt skip that step.

You really shouldn't assume such things. That's all I have to say about that.

Re: 60,000 mile service...

Everything GM says to do falls into two schedules: Normal and Extreme/Heavy-Duty. Following either one is pricey at a dealership BUT you should do what they say fluid and adjustment/belt-wise. At least that's what I've heard

PS Johnny6: I was USN, AEM2C on CVN-73 and we've seen what maintenance means, right? DO IT. What's your MOS/Rating?

Thanks Injuneer.

I just don't see how anyone can actually say the owner's manual is incorrect when it comes to maintenance.
