With 5 grand....

Hey guys. I might be coming into 5 grand (Selling one of my vehicles). My SS is pretty stock, but what would be a good start on mods? I want to build the motor N/A. A strange 12 bolt costs 2500 bucks I think. Damn that's expensive. I'd never break it though..... All ideas welcome.

Thanks

Re: With 5 grand....

Well aftermarket is fun since it makes it sound good, look good and is faster...but remember when you change things is when stuf usually starts to go wrong. Go for simple things first - lid, smooth bellow, z06 MAF, cat-back, maybe some headers if you really want to get into it. The first thing I would do with an M6 car is swap to 4.10 or 4.11 gears.

Re: With 5 grand....

Gears are a good idea. How much would a set of 4:10's cost me? While I'm back there, maybe I should lock the axles? I dunno, get bigger axles? Heh, you're right about the problematics of it. When I started modding my Jeep, everything I bought to fix one problem, opened up 2 more. It's like that with my CJ-7 Also.

Gears and an install kit are around $300 I believe but you will see a huge difference. Do a search to see what brand most people are using.

Anyone know of any good shops around here in HN that would be qualified to touch my baby?

Won't bring her just anywhere.

Re: With 5 grand....

where is HN?

anyway...i agree with the above suggestions except the bellows and the maf...bellows are visual only, and the maf is not really needed untill serious power is made, and actually makes tuning more difficult sometimes.

i would say a lid, LS6 intake, longtube headers, 3" catback (if your SLP isn't already), underdrive pulley, gears and a good tune. other than that i would look into some suspension mods to hook up, like LCAs, SFC and relocation brackets

IMO, As far as the rear end goes it is not really worth it to change it out until you break it. Most people seem to go with 4.11 gears. Another thing, what condition is your clutch in? If its fine then disregard this, if not, look into a street twin or something of that nature

Re: With 5 grand....

Wouldn't you rather do a heads/cam swap with headers and exhaust first? You could make that in under $5K and have enough money left over to do a bunch of bolt-ons, right?

Gross estimates off the top of my head:

Cam Kit- $700
Heads- $2000
LT Headers and Y pipe- $700
Cat Back- $300
------------------------------
$3,700 and one mean car

Why go all out instead of seeing what everything does? Maybe he'll be happy with smaller mods.

Well, because he asked what he should do to his car with $5,000, that's why.

I agree with you 100%.
Then add a few more
4.11 gears-$300
A good clutch-$400
A good shifter-$200
Lid-$100
misc. stuff-$300
----------------------------------
$1,300 and even a meaner car

Total of $5,000 saying you install half or most of the stuff yourself and be making easily over 400 hp to the wheels. Then start saving for a 12 bolt down the road.

Wish I was gonna have 5g's
