396 stroker is .30 over right??

Someone is selling a 396 stroker lt1 shortblock in my area and it's .30 over pistons. Is a 396 stroker .030 over. I thought it was a .40 over block?

3.875 stroke w/ a 4.030 bore and a 5.85 or a 6" rod will give you a 396 so yea.. just find out who did the machine work, etc.. I had bought a 396 short years back only to find out water jacket's have been broken through and bunch of other issue's w/ improper machining and clearancing..

DISPLACEMENT = BORE X BORE X STROKE X#CYL X .7854

BTW, rod length doesn't enter into displacement calculation.

"30 over" is .030 over not .30 the stock 4.000 bore.

If you do the math, .030 over = 395.4 cubes and .040 over = 397.4 cubes.

No big deal on cubic inches, but .040 over bore is pushing it on some LT1 blocks if you are making much power.

The problem isn't the 6" rod putting too much stress on the motor. Its the fact that the wrist pin is so high on the piston that it causes problems interfering with the rings, and leaves you with a short compression height. I run the Oliver billet 5.85's with the kind of power level you are looking at. I've seen the Olivers stand up to a blown 383 putting down close to 900rwHP.

You have to check for a vendor that sells Oliver parts..... the shop that built my engine got them direct from Oliver. Be prepared for "sticker shock" when you see the price.

Re: 396 stroker is .30 over right??

I bought mine 6 years ago.... I think about $1,100. I need to check and see which bolts I got with them. I don't think I got the one that cost $500 extra.
