You probably mean without the first gear selection.

On cars with 2.73's you weren't able to choose the first gear. Or something like that...

Re: 1995 Z28 automatic without first gear ?

As stated above if your car came with 2.73s you were not able to select first gear manually. There is an easy fix in which you remove the console and cut off the tiny plasitc stop on the passenger side of the shifter gate which will then allow you to pull the shifter maunaully back to first. It takes five minutes. If you want to get fancy buy a new applique for the console for a car that came with 3.23s...This will included a "1" in the gear selection...

I guess then the 323 gear cars are faster off the line

UR welcome, but be careful you'll be addicted to manually shifting and your wife/girfriend will get angry at all of the 2nd gear "chirps".....

Re: 1995 Z28 automatic without first gear ?

All things being equal 3.23 cars will have a numerically higher first gear ratio..2.73 (rear gear) x 3.06 (first gear) is less than 3.23 x 3.06....They "should" come out stronger...add 3.42s or 3.73s and its almost uncontrolable without Drag Radials or ET streets...but DAMN is it fun....

I have 323’s in my 95-Z and love to manually shift her. It’s just that a friend told me he didn’t have a first gear option in his 95-Z and he didn't know why. Well, nether did I, until now.

Thanks for the info,

How about 411's, how much of an improvment in 1/4 ET's from the base 323's?

Re: 1995 Z28 automatic without first gear ?

Think about it, whats really the point of blocking off the 1st gear in the first place?

a 2.73 car will use the gear to a higher speed the a 3.23 car so why would it be a real problem if you were able to access it? I dont know why GM wouldnt allow you to

Smile Re: 1995 Z28 automatic without first gear ?

The reason that GM did it was the same as for CAGS on the M6 cars. The theory was, that all the cars so equiped would only used in the manner that they were built. Then, the overall gas mileage for the "fleet" of cars would keep them out of the gas guzzler catagory. This was all covered by most of the car magazines when the 93's came out. Just thank GM for making it so easy to bypass.
If you ever get a chance to see a window sticker from a 4th gen, they were in the economy class for gas mileage. 300 hp with econobox gas mileage. Just gotta make you smile.

It was done so the 2.73 cars would pass the drive by noise standards.
