Auto Or Manual?
Auto Or Manual?
Is manual actually faster or slower on the z28 or formual. And why is manual more expencive if Auto is considered a luxury. SOmeone help me out here cant decide wich to buy.
Re: Auto Or Manual?
check out the may 94 issue of motor trend! the 4l60 e was 3 tenths fasterthan the manual in a0-60 test. the electronic version of the 4l60 is the one to get. also when drag racing in eliminations it is very consistent .imo i could never shift as fast or at the redline like the one in my 94z28.
Re: Auto Or Manual?
On the street, there is not much difference-just your preference on what you like to drive. The auto is a "luxury" because you don't have to shift or push in a clutch.
Re: Auto Or Manual?
I had my mind set on getting a manual but got stuck with an auto. I regret it because I really really really wanted a manual bad. Now... when i am sitting up late at night cant sleep, i practice shifting till i pass out j/k but i have practiced when i was bored.
The auto is faster in many places especially from a stop and can be made all that much faster with a torque converter. the 4l60e is also considered a very good transmission. I guess im happy with it but wouldve rather had a manual. It shifts well and strong, can be upgraded, fairly strong, etc.

Yeah, thats my intentions. When the trans goes, im swapping. Its gonna be a good 1-2k either way. When i had to buy i had a choice between the car i got and another comparable black m6 but i ended up choosing this one because it was much better. It ran better and looked better so i chose it.
Re: Auto Or Manual?
Automatic cars are typically more expensive than standard cars because the auto is normally considered the "luxury" option. However, when it comes to sports cars (F-bodies, 'Vettes, etc) then standards become the more desired ("sporty") option, and therefore they carry the "luxury" price instead of the autos!?
Weird, eh?
I'll agree 110% that manuals are more fun to drive.....I've driven lots of them, including our '73 Camaro
. I'll also agree 110% that automatics are typically "quicker" in drag racing, however, that doesn't rule out the fact that there are a handful of really good stick drivers out there who can out-run the average auto car
.
Buy what you want ... these aren't ~100HP Civics ... the transmission doesn't make the car faster anymore
.

I'm not sure what you mean...the manual was standard equipment on my 1995 Z28...in 1995 the auto transmission was optional equipment (in my car anyway) and carried an additional price tag of (I'd have to dig out it's paperwork) around $700.00.
It appears to me the auto cost more back in 1995 anyway and was actually chosen more and WAS more desirable due to the fact that the auto was an option (just cause its an option I realize that does not necessarily make it "better" )
I think the reason the standard/(manual) transmissions are more desirable these days and todays used manual Z28s cost more NOW in comparsion to the automatic is partly due to the age group that can afford these used cars now that the cars have gone down in value/price...but back in 1995 when my car cost 23,795 dollars...generally older people with a litle more money bought them and they chose to opt for the auto transmission (older people like to kick back and go fast at the same time I suppose
)
(but to tell you the truth I personally did not see much price difference in used autos versus manuals when I was shopping for mine a year ago)
any other explanations why there are more autos around than manuals when autos were optional equipment and cost more when new are welcome. I really don't have an answer to this question I was/am just stating a view on why this may be so.
and for the record...I prefer a manual yet drive an auto as it was the one that I could find in the shape and condition I wanted and had one previous owner in her mid fifties and it was just in insanely awesome shape....that is the most imporatant thing to look for when buying one of these older cars and not what tranny is in it...as one person mentioned...you can put the stick in it later, just get the car in the best shape possible for now, I promise you wont regret THAT.
The auto has its advantages and mine is appreciated more than not. Manuals are more fun to drive and for me always will be...but you won't see me losing any sleep over it...a Z28 auto is not your mothers buick or your fathers Oldsmobile...and this car will not put you to sleep.
as far as speed is concerned, and I'm concerned...they are both even

Re: Auto Or Manual?
Manuals are generally cheaper on almost all cars. I've noticed some suvs and the gto charge more for it. I think it is due to the fact that there are common option packages that have a well equipped car for a little less than picking all the options you want. I think the preferred package has an auto so to get a manual requires some custom work put into it or something along those lines.
Re: Auto Or Manual?
Well, if you could have an auto that can barely handle the torque output of an LT1/LS1 or you could have a manual that was overbuilt and is still considered the best 6 speed out there which would you choose?
Re: Auto Or Manual?
I thought the 4l60e was the best auto transmission ever built?
If mine goes though.... Im not sure if i will get a stock t56 for 1500 or a bullet proof 4l60e with shift kit, and a high stall convertor for that much.

Re: Auto Or Manual?
I picked the M6 because it was $2500 less than the 96 auto at the same lot, but I did have to put about $1000 into it for front suspension work to make it drive better, but $6k + TTL and the front end work was a lot cheaper. plus the 96 was bone stock and mine came with the CAGS delete, elec water pump and borla cat back already on it.
