What Ignition Components are worth upgrading?

budget minded so nothing extravagant. just wondering if there are any benefits (mpg and/or hp) to more powerful coils, wires, ignition modules, msd 6a etc.

On a stock or bolt-on car, plugs and wires would be as far as I would go. I wouldn't replace the coil or ICM unless necessary and I wouldn't run an ignition box unless I had the engine mods to require one.

Didn't the 93-95 models have a weaker coil? I believe I'm going to change my coil when I put a new opti on, but I'm not sure whether to get a Crane or MSD. Are those comparable quality? I think there is also one made by Hypertech.

Yes, the 96-97 coil is better not sure if it is plug and play though on later models (maybe other parts were upgraded on 96-97 years?).

Msd 6a

I got a little better drivability and slightly better throttle response w/mine.BTW try find one used as their not worth the new price.

It isnt plug and play. The plug is a different style (still 3 wire) you can order the correct plug from gm (part no. 88987992) and splice it into the harness. You also need a coil wire from a 96+ LT1.
