What all is involved in doing a fuel pump?

Im gonna be spraying ( Decided to wait to put my D1SC on till I have LOTS of rebuild $$$ ) 100, maybe 125 shot, on a stock bottom, bolt on car. I have all the safety switches and such, but still want to do the fuel pump now so I dont have to worry about it.

I know alot of guys just do the "trapdoor" thing, but I dont want too hack up my car for no good reason, plus its a convertible, and has some kind of support underneath where you would cut so it wouldnt work anyways.

That said, what all is involved in doing the fuel pump? Ill probably do it at home instead of on the rack at work. Besides the obvious, what's involved? I remember a few people saying about dropping the rear end out to do it.

Removing the rearend is not required. The muffler must be removed, to lower the tank, try to get all the gas out to make the tank lighter .

Hahah that makes me feel a little better. I remember everyone fussing about them and wanting to just cut a hole to do the "trap door mod" cause it was SO much work. A few people said you have to drop the rear to make it easier. I never really looked at, but all the ones ive ever done at work, werent that bad as long as their not full ... Glad to hear that was a LT1 Tech rumor about the rear though

Hey Hardcore, I replaced my fuel pump a couple of years ago in my garage and the tank was full to the *****, not fun. Since the jack stands only went so high I removed the axle assembly, made things alot easier and I cut the exhaust off as well. It made for syphoning the gas out easier too and since the tank is out you might as well clean it eh! Good luck.

Hahah OK, I knew I wasnt crazy ...

I should be alright though, I have some huge jack stands from working on the trucks ... Worst case though, Ill do it on a Sunday at the garage I work at. Lifts =

I definatly want to clean it out well. My car only has 18,000~ Miles on it. I bought it totaled with 9 or 10, but it sat from 1996 when it was totaled until I got it all together a few years ago. So im sure theres a ton of grime in the tank from sitting so long with fuel in it. Although I run injector cleaner or Lucas just about every tank full to help so it might not be that bad anymore? When I first tried to start it, I got nothing, but had FP, pulse ( Noid lights make life simple ), spark, etc. So I pulled the rail and cranked it, all 8 injectors were locked up. So im sure the tank had some varnish and **** in it too. Its really the only reason I want to replace the pump instead of just using the stocker for a 100 shot.
