Rusty Fuel tank
Rusty Fuel tank
How can I fix this rust problem short of replacement. Is there an additive to stop tank corrosion? Are others having similar problems? My fuel filter has to be replaced every 2000 miles; rust clogs it. When I replaced the pump I thought I got it all out.Seems to be fuel related since ethanol has been added to gasoline
Clean it out as best as possible then use muratic acid to eat the rust... cleanup might be hard with it still in the car though.
Then there's a gas tank sealer (for motorcycle tanks) that might work.
Ethanol does absorb some water.

Thanks McG
I'll do it but muratic acid will also attack the tank's steel??? Motor cycle sealer sounds like a winner. Your help is valuable.
I will let you know how it work. I have a top access to the tank already from the pump install.
muratic acids are used for pickling (surface cleaning) steel. It attacks rust much much faster than steel, it'll etch into any surface finish there is and leave a scuffed/sandblasting looking finish on the steel. If you dont remove the rust it will continue rusting underneath any coating.
I cleaned a rusted tank once by banging out all the rust flakes and sloshing muratic acid in it and letting it sit for an hour or whatever it took, it was clean metal afterwards. Not bad for less than $5. Also the clean metal will be very prone to rusting again, so you'd want to coat it with something if you're going to have moisture in there.
Maybe a product like this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/SU...6/?image=large
