Replacing Ignition Switch without "VATS"

I need to replace the ignition switch. Can I replace with a new switch that comes with it's own set of keys??? Will the car run without using a "VATS" key system???

Not unless your PCM is reflashed to disable VATS.

...and you bypass the Theft Deterrent Relay (TDR). The VATS is a two part system-starter enable and engine run enable.

OP, what you are talking about is the key cylinder-not the ignition switch. The switch is on the lower part of the column, under the dash.

The key cylinder is what we are replacing, and we bought a new key cylinder from Auto Zone that comes with it's own keys, that don't have any special chip in them. Can we just swap out this key cylinder with what we have, or do we need to go to GM Parts and get a special key cylinder, because of this "VATS" system????

Without the chip, you have to do the things already posted if you want to be able to start and run the engine. Or you have to get a key cylinder with sensor and key that matches the resistance of the key you now use.

Please do NOT cross-post (post the same question on more than one forum). I already answered this on "Advanced Tech", and moved it to "General67-02 F-Body Tech". I'll close that thread, not that I see you have more than one.
