pops and cracks

I just got a 1986 irocz tpi 305 it cranks good but when i try to rev up it pops and cracks.

has the car been sitting??? you need to drain out the old gas

It been sitting about a year i will drain the tank and try new gas thanks for the help

DTC 42 on an 86 IROC is "Ignition Bypass Circuit Error". Appears this is a problem with spark timing, and could be related to the ignition control module. Not sure though.
