No start, new ignition parts

So I installed a new opti, new MSD Blaster Coil (replaced an older MSD coil which was corroding), new plugs. The car distinctly has a loud ping from the muffler when I try to start it but doesn't fire up. Any ideas?

Could the new coil be defective? I tried to unplug the coil wire from the opti to the coil and see if it still makes that ping from the muffler and it does not. Not sure what to conclude.

Thanks in advance.

get your ICM tested.

A car needs three things.
Air, Fuel, Spark.

Verify those first.
Spark - test the plug wires, try holding them close to a frame, if it arcs, your getting spark. If not,y ou need to find out why

Are you sure you got the cam dowel pin in the correct hole in the back of the Opti?

Yep, I made sure to eyeball the hole with the dowel and press it in. It took some effort to press it in by hand but it snapped in.

How can I test to see if the opti is firing correctly? I can say I eyeballed it but who knows what happened while I was stressing under there trying to pop it in.

Is it possible to start the car without the waterpump/fans/radiator fluid/MAF connected? That way I can easily test to see if the Opti is the problem (possibly defective new opti) or maybe the coil.

I havent had another chance to take a look at it but hopefully I can get some input by Wednesday when I'm back at it again.

You shouldn't have to force it on if its in the right hole (did I actually type that..... ).

Yes, you can run your engine briefly without the water pump/fans/MAF (as long as its unplugged). But you should be able to put the elbow and MAF back on easy enough.

Opti's can be bad right out of the box. Sometimes the rotor falls off almost immediately. Did you loctite the screws for the rotor?

Ok so I just took it all back apart and the Opti looked like it came off from the correct hole. I put it back on the same way making sure its in the correct hole and this time it did not snap like last time. The problem now though is that the car will not start. I put key in ignition and I cant get it to turn the motor over. It seems like there is no juice flowing to the starter. I get lights on the dash but thats all.

The coil is loosely bolted onto the block...I actually put my old coil back in rather then the new MSD coil to see if it might've been the coil. Waterpump, MAF, Fans, Crank Pulley, Belt, AIR pump are all off the car however.

What is causing the no start? What else needs to be connected for the car to start?

Thanks in advance.

I've gotten a brand new Delco opti defective right out of the box. The car would turn over really hard and then back fire hard, it would keep doing this and never started. After hours of looking at pigtails and wiring and checking module/coil/grounds I exchanged the opti and left my wp and all off the car, when I turned the key over it instantly started up.

Resolved

Ok so I went and got a new battery, for some reason it started acting weird. Still no start from the car. I then decided to bolt down the coil and those 3 ground(?) rings to the coil. The car fired right up. I'm guessing those ground(?) rings have to be attached to the coil otherwise the car will not fire up. I had a hint something may not have been connected properly when I heard clicking from the fuse box area.

So my new opti, my new coil are all fine, the guy at kragen said my battery may not have had enough juice to actually fire the car up...only enough to have the starter turn the car over. Never ran into this problem before though...weird, my battery was almost 7 years old. What a nice way to spend 4+ hours diagnosing this.

Thanks for the helps guys much appreciated.
