my gas needle is stuck on full

does anybody know y my gas needle is stuck on full ...my car is a 96 lt1 trans am ....please help...some one told me that it could b the sending unit ...so i guess if that is it ...once i put in another fuel pump unit,,,the needle will line up with the gas level right...any suggestions ..thanks

The sending unit is defective, or the wiring. No signal = "full". Shoebox has a detailed writeup on checking the system:

The sending unit is riveted to the fuel pump support bracket. Many years ago when I replaced the sending unit, it was only available as part of the complete pump support assembly for about $250. Hopefully its available as a separate piece by now. You don't need to replace the fuel pump, but if you do, the sending unit requires no calibration or adjustment.
