Map sensor smells of fuel

I've been having a hard starting problem for a few months now. I found that my fpr was leaking so I changed it. The original map was fouled with fuel and the car starting getting 6 miles to the gallon so I changed the original map out with one off an old sunbird. Car started right up with the new map and ran great again till this afternoon and it wouldn't start(took 3 tries). When I got home I took the new map sensor off and it stinks of fuel(wtf?). I dont smell any gas in the vacuum line so I'm not sure how the new map can be getting fouled. I rented a fuel pressure tester a few days ago at autozone and the flat washer was bad on it but I got it to work for a little while and my pressure was at 41 to 40 psi at koeo. Took it back and exchanged it and the washer on their second unit was bad as well .

Have you scanned it for codes? If not, go back to auto zone and grab a loaner OBD1 scanner (if they have one). If they don't have a loaner, a new one should only be like $30.

I scanned it about a month ago when the ses light came on and went back off 5 minutes later. It was a code 36 high resolution but it hasn't come back since.

A "$30" scanner would be one that shorts the pins in the ALDL connector. That type won't work on his 94. 93 was the last year for shorting the pins to flash the codes on the SES light.

Can we assume you are talking about the vacuum line to the fuel pressure regulator?

Yes. I think I may have found the problem. Was checking the condition of the plugs and the number three plug was not seated. Don't know how I managed that . I hope to god that was the problem and it is fixed now. I've been messing with this two or three months and every time I thought I had it fixed it would show up again in a period of two to three days. Drove it into town and back and so far so good.

Re: Map sensor smells of fuel

Icm died the other night leaving me stranded. Had it towed back to my house. I replaced it with a bwd unit as it was the only thing available locally and I need my car. It's amazing how much better the car runs now.
