Fuel Level Sending Unit

went to the dealership cuz the parts store said it was a dealer part only.

they want 568 bucks for the whole assembly minus the pump, or 280 for just the sensor

my gauge reads way past full when full, and i just ran it out of gas yesterday when it was reading just below half tank

i thought i was having problems with my walbro, but it seems to have survived this ordeal as i reached into the tank and only got the tip of my finger wet with fuel when i reached the bottom.

my question is...does anyone sell this part aftermarket, should i just assume half tank is the new empty, or should i try to get this part from a junkyard with the risk of it reading the same way

thanks!

Perhaps you just bent the float arm when you were doing your pump work.

Is that $568 a parts only price? That's at least 2X what the complete assembly (everything but the pump) cost 6 years ago, and I didn't get much of a discount on it, because it would have cost me more to have the car sit on the lift waiting for Dal to ship me the part, than it cost to just pick up from a dealer. And, when I bought the assembly way back then, they did not sell the sensor separately at all.

My records show the part # was 25160326 and the price was $235. gmpartsdirect show:
GM PART # 25160326
CATEGORY: Fuel Tank Meter Sender/Connector
PACK QTY: 1
CORE CHARGE: $0.00
GM LIST: $514.11
OUR PRICE: $267.34
There description seems to suggest that its only the sender, but that was the part number for the complete fuel tank mount assembly with sender, wiring harnesses, etc.

yeah, i found that one on gmpartsdirect.

i dont know what they were trying to charge me 500 bucks for, but i guess i'll start rummaging through junkyards to get one for cheaper.

might end up buying a new one just so it doesnt go bad for another number of years

re: Sending unit

HEllo, Try looking at Partstrain.com or rockauto.com, they have the most inexpensive sending units that I have found. I had to replace my unit in my 89 iroc

thanks for trying though!!! keep em coming, ran out of gas AGAIN, luckily both times they've been in the the neighborhood so i just walked to the house, picked up the gas can (which i keep full now) and drop a couple gallons in it.

there are a couple floating around on ebay every once in a while. but what's to say they read right, or for how long?

Mine does that too. When I bought the car the needle floated around like a toothpick in a fishtank... then I found out the gas cap was bad (it was loose then when I tightened it, it wouldn't come out).

I changed the cap and that made the needle steady and then ran out of fuel with the needle a little below 1/4. Now when I fill up it goes past full, and I fuel up by checking the needle below 1/4 and my odo.

took the thing apart again cuz the car quit running for some reason

found that a wire was not connected to the fuel level sensor, so i reconnected it, put the pump and everything back together, and the car cranked right up.

the guage works as it did before, but i'm assuming half tank is empty
