Fixing the troublesome fuel gauge

I posted it in electronics, but no one responded really, despite "ttt's". I'm trying to figure out what GM did to fix the fuel gauges in later camaros and trans ams. Basically, right now, whenever I turn right, it goes down a lot, turn left, it goes up a lot, up, it goes up, down it goes down. I would love to have an actually accurate fuel gauge reading, as the first night I owned the car a year and a half ago, I thought I had 1/8th tank, but, nope, I was empty.

Does anyone know what GM did to fix this problem?

When you turn, start or brake, the fuel moves around in the tank, and the level changes. Sitting still, I think everyone just accepts the fact that full is 15+ gallons, 1/2 is ~5 gallons and 1/4 is about ~1.5 gallons.

I put 5 gallons in my car and it says full. That's the problem. And this problem isn't found on newer LS1's. I just wanted to know what GM did to fix the problem.

If your gauge indicates "F" with only 5 gallons in the tank, it is not typical of the way the gauge works in most of the other 93 and up F-Bodys. It would appear to be a problem peculiar to your car. Mine annoyed me because it indicated the numbers shown in my first post. I spent a lot of time on a calibration chart when the car was still new. Shoebox has a writeup on his gauge, and its basically the same set of numbers. It is not normal for it to read "F" with 5 gallons in the tank.

That problem is not found on LT1 f-bodies, either. Could be wiring, gauge, float assy...

You can do the tests described in the link to prove where your trouble lies.

It reads full with only 5 gallons?

Either the sender's messed up or your gauge is.

Ave you ever taken the needles off the gauges (installing white face overlay?)

Just a thought... it may just be the needle needs to be popped off and reinstalled.

nah, never taken off the needle or anything.

maybe I should just get a fuel cell? maybe that would have an accurate reading? plus my car will look like it's actually got some *****!!
