Aviation Fuel?

I know this is a little off topic because its not f-body, but the s-10 forum's BLOW...... Buddy has a s-10 he's wanting to run Aviation fuel in. Low lead, 100 octane fuel. I keep telling him VP would be better but he thinks airplane fuel will destroy his engine. Any thoughts/opinions?

327 stock crank, TRW 11:1 forged pistons, balanced rotating assembly, brownfield heads, Edelbrock RPM intake, carb, cam & 1.6 rollers, custom headers, no emissions ....

Why does he feel he needs the extra octane? Sounds like 93 should be more than enough for that setup.

If no convertors, should be fine. 100 low lead is bs. It has like 8 times the lead of the old av 87 octane gas.

11 to one as long as it tuned right should be fine. I run a lot of 100 octane to avoid any knock under full boost in the heat here, but honestly it is way overdoing it I am sure. Helped dyno tuning it though.....was able to desensitize the knock sensors and get the tune right, then set them back to normal....

I've run 100LL back to back on the dyno several times and found out it is pretty much the equal of VP Red and sometimes even VP C-12.

It is a great fuel for mid CR race engines as the price is so much lower than race fuel.

You will see results, and it smells great. It would be ok to run once in a while or mix with your unleaded. However, even though it's called low lead, it still contains a ton. You would't believe how lead deposits will build up especially, in your spark plugs. If your looking for higher octane go with racing fuel or an octane boosting fuel additive.

100LL can have up to 2.5 grams/gallon lead Source

Leaded race gas has 4-6 grams/gal lead. Source

Looking for some higher octane than what they sell here. Only have 91 at the pump and running boost. Was wondering what the 100 LL would do to my o2 sensors? Also heard about adding a couple ounces of marvel oil to it?

Get water/methanol injection. Works as well as mid-octane race gas, is a lot cheaper, and won't futz up parts with lead contamination/deposits.

91 is good enough for 11:1 I very much doubt you will see any gains with higher octane.If you want to raise it a point or so add an octane boost

According to my references, 100LL has a maximum allowable lead content of 0.56 grams/liter (2.12 grams/gallon). That's about what mid-grade leaded automotive fuels contained in the "olde" days, at least when I was designing blending systems for Esso. Current cost is about $4.60/gallon. By comparison, VP C-12 and C-16 have 4 - 6 grams/gallon.

One issue with using aviation fuel in auto engines is the volatility. Aviation fuels are blended with low vapor pressure components, to resist boiling at high altitudes. As a result, they are harder to vaporize at sea level. This can result in hard cold starts, and slow throttle response.

I wanted to use it as a cushion for the 10.5:1 compression with boost. So from your facts injuneer it contains less lead than some of the racing fuels? I was reading on another site that it is pretty dry fuel and adding some marvel oil to it?

I'm not sure what you gain by adding any type of oil. Oil generally is the last thing you want in a boosted or nitrous motor, because it can reduce effective fuel octane. Maybe there's something about "Marvel" that I'm not familiar with. Not sure what is going to keep a 10.5:1 engine happy with any appreciable boost.

If you want to raise the octane of your unleaded pump fuel, get some toluene. Or do what Rich suggested and run water/alcohol.
