Autometer fuel level sender in stock tank? Anyone?
The fuel level sender went out for the 3rd time the other day. This seems to be an every 2 year thing now. I am sick and tired of spending almost $300 for the assembly from GM and was wondering if anyone has hacked an autometer fuel level sender into their stock tank? I know I would have to use an autometer gage too but thats no big deal. They are cheap and seem to last forever. A friend has had the same one in his nova's fuel cell for the last 10 years and it still works fine.
It does not look like it would be hard to do. Just use a hole saw to cut a second hole in the top of the tank and add the gasket and fuel level sender. Bolt it down, run the wires and install the gage and it should work.
Disclaimer: I know the risk of cutting into the tank. I would keep the hole saw cooled with water and would make sure the tank is well aired out before cutting into it.
