97 z28 runs great dies mile down rd
Hello, I bought my 97 z28 auto 30th rag top new. 100k dependable. Now still starts runs perfect in every way. Mile from my house dies.. like I shut off the key. Stranded cranks and cranks. Wait 10-20 mins starts and can just make it home and dies again. Fuel psi is fine at port in engine bay? Or let sit in driveway for 5 mins and does the same thing. No leaks. I admit never did a tune up in 100k but for the first mile runs like new still.. Fast and all. Great car. Any help or suggestions would be great. Also how crazy is it that it has a engine code light on that states the trans is slipping since 40k, so yes fails inspection, to fix... have light reset, drive very slow or light footed for 40-50 miles on highway, crawl to Dmv inspection. Get a new sticker, punch it out the DMV driveway and the light pops back on. The bad trans will light the tires up for the past 60K. LOL

Thank you for the reply. I had bought a scanner a year ago and I am looking for it ( Found plastic box it came in so far, MIA in garage) to scan the car and tell you the codes. I'm sorry for the slow reply I work 7days a week and it kills me the car can not be driven ...if even to drive to work for fun any more. I will reply soon. Thank you 30thconvertible

I had the exact problem with mine, after pulling my hair out and spending plenty of $, it was the sensor that controls coolant temp to the computer located in the lower part of the water pump. For some reason as soon as the car reached a certain temp it shut down, I would crank and crank until about 20 min, long enough for it to cool down, and would start right back up. That was all it was, replaced the sensor and all is good, car runs good.

I had the same problem, but mine didn't seem to be correlated with temperature or anything like that -- it was completely random. Sometimes it would die after 15 miles, sometimes after just three... after a while, though, it progressively got worse and worse.
After replacing multiple parts in looking for the issue, nothing seemed to work. I took it down to a shop, and they told me the distributor was basically dead. They replaced that (which cost a LOT, over $600), and now it hasn't died for over a thousand miles.
