94 Z28 Fuel smel - Is the EVAP system "closed"?
94 Z28 Fuel smel - Is the EVAP system "closed"?
I have 94 Z28, 41,000 original miles.
The car wreaks of of fuel when I shut it off. I've had it back to the dealer at least 6 times trying to deal with this. The smell seems to be most prominent around the rear drivers well where the evap system is.
They replaced the WHOLE evap system but the car still stinks of fuel.
Now they're telling me the system is "open" on 93-95 cars and the smell is perfectly normal.
I'm not buying it.
HELP!

I would not take it back there and give them anymore money. You should not smell fuel and I think they should know that. Hate it when someone throws parts and is just guessing. Unless you know how to do your own work, I would find someone else and ask questions and get estimates before putting any money out. Does it seem like its running rich fuel or raw totally unburned fuel? How long can you smell it for after shut off?
Here are some ideas.

Well, the good news is it hasn't cost me anything up to this point.. it was basically warranty work. BUT, since I picked the car up on Thursday they fired the service manager, general manager, and shop foreman and I've basically been told they've done what they can and I'm on my own.
At this point they've replaced the solenoid, valves, and cannsiter as well as smoke and pressure testing the system and they say everything is fine.
I generally do most of my own work but I'm just not familiar with the F-bodies of this generation so I need to know where to even start.

I'm not sure about the upper lines.
I took it in again today and they smoke and pressure tested it as well as went through the factory EVAP system diagnostic and it passes every test with flying colors.
BUT... its gotten so bad I can't drive the car anymore.
I'm lost.

Re: 94 Z28 Fuel smel - Is the EVAP system "closed"?
The lines at the top of my tank cracked when the tank was pulled for some modifications. The smell was overwhelming, particularly sitting at idle at a stop light, with the window open. My clothes would smell of fuel. They dropped the tank and replaced the lines and the smell went away.
But if its passing a pressure test, it would appear your lines aren't leaking.
In any case, there is no way a strong fuel smell at the rear of the car is "normal". The system is closed. The cap is non-vented.

Ok everyone. Got around to smoke testing the car today at a friends shop and it was blatantly obvious where the leak was (and also that the stealership had NEVER tested it).
Its leaking from the line that travels between the canister and valve.
Does anybody know if or where I can get that line? I know its been obsoleted through GM.

Its actually that nylon stuff with a conduit attached to it. I'm sure I can use fuel line, but with my car being a low mileage original I'd like to find the real thing if possible.
