Z28 DIY Turbo Build - Pics

This was originally a DIY rear mount. My Holset H2D was way too big for a rear mount, so I moved it last weekend. Here is the result after the sparks and dust settled in my garage.

I get full boost in 1st now, and I see full boost as soon as 2800 RPM.

Mocking it up

Exhaust feed pipes

Homemade Y-pipe - wastegate mounted

Who says there's no room under the hood of an F-Body? Turbo is in front of the radiator. So far no temperature problems!

DIY downpipe flange for my Holset bolt-on housing.

I retained the scavenge pump from the rear mount.

Plenty of room.

Fits under the hood.

I see you cut the radiator support up top? Is that where the radiator is going to sit when the kit is done?

I left the radiator in its stock position. There are supports holding it in place. I did remove the AC condensor from in front of the radiator.

What about an Air to water intercooler mounted on the drivers side in front of the fenderwel , that way you dont have to bring it over the radiator support, but through it to the side?

I like youre thinking though, There is quite a bit of room in the nose of our cars.

Thank you for the idea. The gears are already turning.

That's definitely thinking outside the box. Never heard of a turbo in front of the radiator. I think I'd fab up some sort of heat shield to go between the turbo hot side and the radiator to slow down some of the convection and radiation heat transfer to the coolant.

Re: Z28 DIY Turbo Build - Pics

actually, the heat shield doesnt seem like a bad idea. i saw you said no issue with coolant temps, but gotta kinda wonder how the structural aspect of the radiator will hold up, and doesnt the engine oil run through there aswell?

but back to the heat shield, if you could make it long enough to go to the bottom of the car, where it could catch some air, and circulate it over the turbo, it could be a multi-purpose heat shield. also noticed you didnt have the "air deflector" down there due to the exhaust piping, were you going to fab up a metal deflector or just leave it off? also, curious what ground clearance is like. i had thought for some time about doing a setup similar to this right in front of the block, but never though about in front of the radiator (always wanted room for an FMIC)

also, for intercooling purposes, i use a methanol/alky sprayer from alkycontrol.com. might save ya some trouble, kit is like 450 bucks. totally adjustable to kick on a certain boost levels, you control initial amount, and also the ramp rate. works great with my blower setup. just an alternative to spending money on an intercooler and piping.

maybe just a solid amount of that heat wrap around turbine side will def. work just fine. i know many with that wrap whom have them stay real cool with it on

btw, i was curious what sized piping you used up to the Y...i got under my car today and there isnt much room under the K member, i was considering 3"...but now i am contemplating making a thin...wide "box" to give more ground clearance but not restrict flow.
