Why so harsh on the LT1?

Why so harsh on the LT1?

I understand what a lot of people are saying, about the pistons, and the compression of the LT1 being not ideally suitable for boost.

My question is, then, how can these companies boost an LS2 with no problem when it has the same CR as the LT1? Do the style pistons really have that big of an impact?

I've heard of both communities (LT1 and LSx) cracking pistons with equal incidents. Unless your fuel/spark tuning is spot on, the turbo is the right size and your boost of a stock block is in moderation, you're going to bust the brittle Hypereutectic pistons. Whether it's outright piston crown failure or the top ring overexpanding from the extra combustion heat and grabbing the cylinder wall, it's going to break. The thing that the LT1 block has over the LSx block is that the LT1 has five head bolts/studs per cylinder to keep that head gasket sealed whereas the LSx has only 4 studs. You can enhance either block to seal better than stock but from a stock block/head surface standpoint, you're sealing better with 5 bolts. The old 5.0 Mustangs came with a more boost friendly 9.0 compression ratio while the venerable LT1 came with 10.5. If people would simply quit acting like piston replacement was brain surgery and just swap to a forged -22 dish SRP, Diamond, etc piston, they could be pushing 500 hp on the street with a turbo in moderate tune and have the drivability/civility of a grocery getter.

The LT1's do not suck, they are different. The LT1's have much higher compression than the LS1's. Thus the reason why they don't like boost.

Either one between the LT1, and the LS1 (or LS2 for that matter) were not meant for boost from the factory, and both hold about the same chance of breaking the same elements from the motor if put under boost conditions.

Both will probably hold a little boost for a little while, and maybe even a few more pounds with a good tune, fuel system, methanol injection ect. But when it comes down to it, if you put a moderate amount of boost on any of them, and its only a matter of time before a rebuild.

Yeah... its not that "hard" persay. Nor that expensive... just a lot of work.

On top of that, if i pull the motor and do pistons, i mise (sp? lol) well do a full forged bottom end/splayed mains (for all the work of pulling the motor... go big or go home), and that does cost a little bit of doe.

I spent 6k on the turbo setup, then plan on another 6k into motor to make a street warrior that will be untouchable in these parts
