what kind of transmission is better for turbo charged

im not too good at using the search engine so i dont know if this has been posted before...

i was just wondering if an auto or manual transmission is better than the other with a turbo setup. Because with a manual you have to let off the accel when you shift........thanks for oyur input.

With a rev limiter you don't need to let off during shifts. However, I'd prefer an automatic since you can build boost against the converter off the launch.

I like shifting gears. And you don't have to let off the gas to shift.

However, if you're drag racing with a turbo car, an auto is more preferable as Dave mentioned because you can spool the turbo on the line and leave with the motor already seeing boost.

IMO, automatics are always better for drag racing.

But 99% of the time, I'm not at the dragstrip so I would rather have a manual trans.

With a manual trans you can leave the line with boost if you use a 2-step. If you powershift, you will not lose any boost on the shifts.

Added bonus, you get to hear the BOV whistle when you shift with a manual. It sounds soooo cool. That's the real reason I'm building my turbo 383.

Better idea, I'll buy the biggest turbo I can find and use my supercharger to run it. It should spool mad fast, YO!

IMO an automatic is best. But a Lenco would be pretty trick too since it shifts kinda like an automatic, save for the launch. And it'll last you for practically forever. A friend of mine has 2 8-sec fox body mustangs that uses these and has been using them for a number of years without any problems. No rebuilds or breakages. They're expensive but DAMN tough.

I've got a little of both....an automatic w/ a manual valvebody. An automatic will aklways be more CONSISTENT for drag racing, but not necessarily FASTER.

Thast what I was going to say. DSM guys have been using 2 Steps for awhile. Mine doesnt work right but my buddies will build about 8-10 lbs at the line and he launches on that.

I agree totally

Unless all you do is drag racing, or you are driving impaired, go for the 6 speed
