What is "ideal" RWHP?
What is "ideal" RWHP?
My 95 Z has pretty much every suspension part available on it, and I am looking to slap on an ATI-D1SC to my 383, within the next few months. My question is, what is the ideal RWHP for my car? Many people can run superb times with not much power while others can sometimes have to much and never be able to really harness all of it. I am thinking about 600-650 to the wheels. That should be the point at which I have plenty of power (I will definatly still have to feather the throttle through the first few gears), but not so much that I will be beaten by a 450 RWHP car on the street because of traction. Have I set a bad target range? Or is that about right?
Re: What is "ideal" RWHP?
from stock motor to 383 the gains where not that cool. (keep in mind my 383 set-up did include a blower in the future.) then put 8psi of boost making power in sig. Runs like an animal. Now going to AFR heads to run more boost (11-13psi). I think it should be in the 620-640 RWHP range. I think your set up & tuner can help you with getting the power to the street. lower gears like3.23 & timing, are a couple of examples of changes you may need to make to run hard on the street. To tell you the truth my car hooks extremely well for the givin power it makes now. Good Luck.....Joe

I'll keep the gearing in mind. Currently I have 3.73's, but might drop down to some grandma gears. My buddy back home just put down over 700 RWHP in his 02 SS at only 9 lbs of boost with the D1-SC! His motor is set up with a little better flowing heads and a few other goodies. I figure at 12 lbs I should be able to attain 600, and 650 RWHP. But all this still doesn't answer my question on ideas of ideal RWHP.
What is a good # for RWHP to shoot for ideally?

500 hp with a smallish cam, ported heads and supercharger is alot of fun around town. You can smoke the tires whenever you want. Its very responsive yet controllable. Low end torque is good. My gas mileage sucks though. 15mpg in the city. 19 on the highway. I can spin the tires in 3rd gear going 70 mph.

Call911, I'm sorry to respond to your Post. the reason no one else replied to in the last week is because it has too much grey area. 450-750rwhp is the real answer. And everybody is going to give thier version of the truth. Meaning (this works for me.) from tweenty different people........Joe
Also how fast do you want to go... If you think 550rwhp is going to be fast, It's not Fast enough in my opinion.........

There is an equation that is well known to hotrodders. The three variables are speed (or in this case, hp), reliability, and money. The more speed and the more reliability you want, the more it's gonna cost. You can sacrifice speed or reliability if you wish to lower the cost. The same logic applies here not only in terms of making the power in the first place, but in how much you are willing to spend to harness it. I think that to be at all specific, you need to have some kind of a budget in mind. Without financial constraints, I think you could do a really nice 1000rwhp 4th gen. Like any car with huge hp, you'd have to treat it with respect. But there is no reason you would be beaten by a 450hp car while driving it, unless it was on a greasy road and the 450hp car was AWD or something like that.
Honestly, if you are that concerned with drivability and such your money would be better spent on a C6 Z06. You'd be faster than 99.999% of cars out there and your concerns about using the hp would be already taken care of by the OEM. Even with "just" 6-700rwhp if you want the rest of the car upgraded to match you will spend about as much when resale is considered as you would on the C6. OTOH, if you want even more power and enjoy modding cars, then I'd give a different answer.

You spoke of suspension mods, but what of the drivetrain mods to handle 650 rwhp? With a sticky set of tires, the rear end, driveshaft and tranny won't be happy for long.

Fastbird is correct. And the driveshaft is from LPE rated at over 1000 hp. Last summer with my current set up with some slicks, it took 5400 rpm before it would stop falling on its face after the launch. (It actually pulled my 17X9.5 front wheels off the ground about 2 inches at the hole shot!) At about 5600 at launch I would get a tiny skirch and then hook all the way. Done all with 420 at the wheels. (still the current set up) I figure with 600-650, and dropping it at about 3 or so, it should still do well. The rest of the car, including drivetrain and suspension is pretty much dialed in. Just need to add the power now.
