wastegate help...
OK, I decided to go with this big bad nice 60mm HKS unit, so I wouldn't have to worry.. well,, I am gonna have to worry
to reroute it back into the downpipe is gonna take some VERY VERY creative pipe routing(its a ~2.5" pipe). so much so, that I think I am gonna end up with a lot of problems. its gonna make me push my cross over over, which means its gonna be even close to the plugs.. etc etc.. basically, this big ole honkin pipe IF IT EVEN FITS is gonna be TIGHT.
so, I am considering going back to a Turbonetics racegate, however I am concerned with its ability to control boost. I intend to max out this turbo(950-1000hp) and run about a 100 shot of nitrous down the road. I am not super concerned with keeping things in check at that power level(should i?) with the racegate. My concern is being able to really crank the boost way DOWN. i want to be able to run minimal boost for autoX and road racing.
Anybody have first hand experience with the race gate in these apps? It will be mounted after the 2 banks collect(unlike the ghetto turbotech kit) so it should be reasonably effcient.
I figured if all else failed, and the racegate couldn't keep up.. I could always add a 2nd one in the cross over like the turbotech.. but would rather not.
if I really HAVE to use the HKS unit to make it all work the way I want to, I can probably make it work.. but it aint gonna be easy
people that know.. CLOO ME IN
edit: i am also of course considering a 46mm tial, etc.. just someting in that size range

You can always add in a second racegate in the ghettolicious tt system
I like my Innovative wastegates but they are a bit on the large side. What about using the hks setup and doing a 2.5 inch exhaust system for that alone? I have seen people put a muffler on the wastegate and run that system right out before the tire or whereever. (there is some fairly compact mufflers out there for this) Would that work for ya?

You could always go with two smaller dia. tubes for re-routing it back to the downpipe. That might give ya a bit more options for routing the pipe. Do you really need 2-1/2" for the return? That seems really really big for that.
FWIW, I was planning on a 2" return for my 52mm Greddy wastegate, and I thought that was huge.

I don't want the ghettoness associated with routing it to atmosphere, I thought about riggin up a muffler.. but again, ill have just that much more stuff to deal with, and ill have more noise along with exhaust coming from the front of the car. That will be my last resort.
I am going to switch to probably an Indygate(2" pipe) and a 90degree inlet/outlet angle. I think it will work. if all else fails, Ill dump it to atmosphere
Having never drive/heard a car with a wastegate to atmosphere.. how anoying really is it? thats the question of the hour. I really dont like the idea of listening to an exhaust leak everytime I put the car under load.

How much boost do you want Jordan? Reason i ask if you are going to use large boost which i have a feeling you are doing the wastegate will vent when you are in boost where there is lots of noise (whistling roaring etc....)
I used to run a dump right at the end of the drivers door (no other exhaust) and did not like the exhaust sound putt putting around but on boost it was great.
Why not set it up and dump it to the atmosphere and if you don't like it then later you can go back and figure something out. working in a exhaust tube isn't that hard to do really.

if I dumped it, it would be in front of the drivers tire.. so I would prolly hear it :-/
If I dump it, i can use my current HKS wastegate no problem, and I can probably even redesign my cross over a little(its not done yet). It will make things a bit easier, but I would rather do it right, once
sounds like its one of those things i won't be able to decide unless I hear it myself.. and I cant think of any cars local setup like that

I ran an open gate on my Typhoon for a while, and I couldn't stand it. VERY annoying. That was a v-6 though.
Do you have any updated pics of your turbo header? What material did you end up making it with?
No local cars setup like that
come on go to the race track you live in the hp state
I would start looking where there is some mustang racers or big turbo racers and you can start to talk to them about there wastegates maybe even listen up front like.
I honestly don't see the venting to the atmosphere as a prob though.

steven-
down here at A&m, we dont got fancy cars like that
Its all perception I guess. I want a car that makes 1000hp, gets 20+mpg and my mom can drive it(and doesn't complain). my old 401 made about 800hp on juice, and fit all the above.. see if I can get 1000hp and still be comfy....

Personally I like the sound of a wastegate vented to atmosphere when your at wot.Putting around town you wouldn't think the wastegate would be open that much with a large turbo (because of the lag).
Jordan trust me u dont want that wastegate venting to atmosphere. Its very loud and annoying. The turbonetics wastegate is plenty large for your application. The problems with it is the diaphram inside. They have a tendacy to tair, cheap design. With that 60mm you sould be able to turn the boost completely off, with the propar spring rate of course! My buddy runs the HKS 40mm on his PT88 and has a .8 bar spring and has no problems turning it down to 10psi.
In my opinon here are your options. If your stuck with the 60mm wastegate, just reduce the pipe to about 1.5. That is what I ran, about 4 ft of it. I could turn my car down to 8psi, with a 10 psi spring.
Or if you can return the 60mm just go with the 40mm HKS/tial or a Tial 46mm. With the 40/46 you will should be able to still turn the boost down to 6psi
Good luck
