Vortech install question

I am in the process of installin a vortec s/c on a 1996 Z28. The pulley that goes on the crank does not fit. Is there a different balancer that i should buy? Any ideas the pulley does not sit flush on the balancer. Also the balancer is real close to the s/c mount bracket.
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Re: Vortech install question

The balancer will end up being very close to the lower supercharger mounting bracket...that is normal. Hell, its tough to squeeze the stock serpentine belt between the balancer and the bracket, but it can be done.

Regarding the crank pulley for the supercharger....you will either need to get the correct balancer with the groove machined into it or you will need to have a machine shop do it for you. If you look at the back of the pulley, you'll see a raised ridge that goes around the hole in the middle. That has to fit into the balancer, as it helps keep the pulley steady to keep it from wobbling.

I bought my supercharger kit used and it didn't come with the balancer, but luckily my car had previously had a Vortech on it and the balancer already had the groove machined into it. I don't know for certain if the brand new kits come with the correct balancer from Vortech or not.

That's funny, I got a machined balancer with my new kit back in 99. Are you doing a new kit, or a used one?

Re: Vortech install question

Vortech seems to have a problem with this. Mine came with two blower pulleys and no balancer. A balancer should be in the kit. I had to have the front of my stock balancer machined smooth. The Vortech blower pulley should have a flat, machined surface on the balancer to mate to.

I sold my T-trim a while back to a guy with an S-trim. While under his car, I noticed that his incorrectly was using the stock balancer with the cast surface in the front. As a result, his supercharger pulley cracked.
