Just one question, why did you opt to only vent off of one half of the exhaust with the wastegate in the crossover? Otherwise looks interesting! Kinda resembles a turbo tech setup with larger tubing, hope you got a solution to the poor oil drain from the turbo in that location. You going to use a scavenge pump?

Re: Turbo headers??

I have a few more questions:

1. How much power would I be giving up by using 1 5/8" headers that merge into 2.5" collectors (which will merge into a single 3" pipe before entering the turbo)with my 383LT1 T76 turbo project? Do I need to go 1 3/4" primaries that merge into a 3" pipe for each headers, and will it make a huge difference? I have AFR210's on my 383LT1 and I would like to make 700rwhp on 15psi (w/ 93 octane).

2. Anyone out there using 1 5/8"? The reason I ask is because it seems as though there are alot more header options with 1 5/8" primaries.

3. Are D port headers necessary? Some headers like SLP's arent necessarily D port if I remember correctly (when you actually look at them), so does it even matter?

As long as the wastegate vents upstream of the turbo, it effectively reduces exhaust pressure, thus flow, into the turbine. If the turbine ever required less than 4 cylinders' worth of exhaust, the flow could actually reverse in a small section of the crossover pipe between the wastegate Tee and the driver's side header. My bet is, though, that this would never actually happen.

I didn't realize that it's similar to turbo tech until long after I started it. It does, however, have much larger pipe, and a much larger turbo. As far as oil drain, I hope that it'll work Ok since the turbo is in the same location as the Vortech it replaced, and the oil drain worked fine then. If it doesn't work, I'll run it lower in the pan.

I made my headers with 1 5/8" tubing into a 2.5" collector and then to the turbo flange. The next set that I'm going to start building here as soon as I get some supplies will utilize stainless round SBC flanges so I can insert the tube inside the flange and TIG it from the inside thus eliminating leaks. Stainless Works sells these flanges. They are a little pricy at $120, but they are stainless, and made for the 1 5/8th tubing. The D-ports even those made for 1 5/8 tubing will not allow the tube to be inserted in the flange without some creative "forming"

You are correct about the SLP headers, they utilize a rectangular flange that is used by the mid 90's Vortech trucks. As long as the port is larger than the exhaust outlet in the head, it is fine.

Thanks Bill. You dont think 1 5/8 will be limitting on a 383?

Re: Turbo headers??

Limiting, no, but you may have to see how well that size flange mates up to your ported heads.

Yeah mono-blade from arizona speed and marine.

700rwhp on 15psi will depend on how well your heads flow. Unless they flow in the 300's I dont think you will make 700rwhp till about 18-20lbs.
