Turbo charger with hot cam

Just came to mind how would the lt4 hot cam work with a turbo charger. Since both start to kick in at top end??

Hotcam is a 112lsa correct? From what I understand turbo cars dont like a low LSA, hinders spool up.... I have a 114lsa TR224 and I was wondering the same thing cause Ive been contimplating turbo as well, I heard my 114lsa is "riding the fence" as far as compatibility for turbo.

The HC works ok, but isn't the optimum for a turbo setup. It would be better suited to a S/C. At least that is what most cam grinders have told me. I made 405/513 at 6 psi with the HC on a stock motor, with my JY twins. So it WILL work, but your probably leaving some power on the table.

Take a look on Competition Motorsports site; they have numerous turbo and s/c specific cams listed, and you will notice that they have totally different specs.

And turbos don't "kick in on the top end", that is more like a S/C curve.

Re: Turbo charger with hot cam

112 shouldn't be considered low LSA. Most articles say to use 112-114 LSA for turbo, whereas NA would require 104-108.

The problem maybe the duration split. Most turbo cams are single pattern or reverse split. The Hot Cam may work with a well designed header and high A/R turbo since that would reduce backpressure.

BTW, I don't really consider a turbo OR hot cam to be top-end. Both come in low in the rpm range as compared to a CC306/centrifugal.

I have read some of your posts about turbos on LT1's and you seem to be pretty knowledgeable with things. I have the XE 224/230 cam on a 112. I know this isnt a good forced induction cam but do you think it would be ok? My buddy had the same cam but he was running the Vortech S Trim on 6 psi. It pulled really well!

The 224/230 - 112 is a very good blower cam, though most will disagree. However, there was a Procharged Z28 a few years back with 355 cid, ported LT1 heads, ported intake, 18 psi boost, and a 224/230 - 112 cam that pulled 147 mph in the quarter. Just be sure to use 1.6 rockers and/or a high-lift intake lobe.

Hot cam works very good. I have one myself pulling great numbers on the dyno. Maybe its not the best cam for a turbo but its defiantly not the worst.

thanks man! my friends car ran very good with that cam. 6psi felt like it was alot faster than 100 shot of nitrous!

Re: Turbo charger with hot cam

kinda out of line but , i am interested in the hotcam and a S/C, how good will a stock motor hold up to the S/c at about 6psi or less...how long will it last and what may be a close guess of RWHP with hotcam headers and S/C at 6psi
