Re: Turbo Build For Jason Short

When do you anticipate it will be together Jason? I'm a member of the Capitol District Camaro Club and we will be meeting on the 21st to decide on some things to do. I'm going to suggest we, as a club, all drive to some point, a cruise so to speak. It would be great if your car is together and dependable at that point so we could meet and you could join us or perhaps I could get them all to drive to Dinosaur BBQ in Rochester and you would be there. No matter what, best of luck to you on this new build!

Re: Turbo Build For Jason Short

Hey Dave,
If all goes well, I hope to have it complete by May. The only thing I have left to buy is the turbo and wastegate. The motor, clutch, tranny, torque arm, and driveshaft are all in the car now. I just have to test fit the hotside, take the headers to Swain Tech (10 minutes from me) for coating, and finish up the cold side plumbing which is mostly done already. From there, I just need to install my dual intank pump setup and start tuning.

A trip to Rochester would be sweet! I was just at Dinosaur BBQ about a week and a half ago It just doesn't get much better than that place!

I could round up quite a few F-body guys here locally if your club wanted to make the trek out to Rochester. We could have a sizeable F-body get together!!

So sick Jason. Great job Jon! Man I'm so on the fence in swapping out my F1 for a PT88. If I can get 5K for the entire F1 kit I just might bite the bullet...it's only got 1K miles on it if that.

Gonna be badazz ride when it's done!

Silas,

Re: Turbo Build For Jason Short

Thanks Silas From what I've seen recently, you should be able to get $4500 at least for your setup. Probably more.

Jon has gone WAY above and beyond for me on this setup. I can't tell you how happy I've been with the fit of this setup now that I have it all mocked up.

I had a VERY specific layout in mind that Jon was able to 100% provide. In fact, he was able to give me even MORE features that I had hoped for! The only thing I was willing to get rid of was my A/C.

My criteria:

-Front mount turbo setup with 1 3/4" forward-facing stainless headers.

-Passengers side downpipe exit through the K-frame for zero loss of ground clearance.

-Retain ALL stock accessories in stock location (K-frame, motor mounts, ABS, accessory bracket, alternator, etc...).

-No cutting of the radiator support and mounting the radiator vertical

-Wastegate plumbed back into downpipe.

What Jon delivered:

-Front mount turbo setup with 1 3/4" forward-facing stainless headers

-Passengers side downpipe exit through the K-frame. I have a minimum of 3/4" of clearance at every point through the K-frame/motor mount/engine block with the exception of one area next to back edge of the K-frame (which still is just under 3/8"...plenty). I was amazed at how perfectly this pipe fit in the such a tight space with not even a single area of "clearancing" required.

-ALL of the stock accessories in the stock location have been maintained. It was very important to me not to have to cut up my low mileage SS for this build. I have not had to move anything. The body harness, cruise control cable, waterpump, tensioner, accessory bracket, radiator hoses.....nothing had to be removed or even relocated. The only thing I had to do was rotate one of the waterpump housing ports about 30 degrees, but I am still able to use the same hose.

-Jon was able to position the turbo so that I could even use my large BeCool radiator in the stock position (not even having to "pull" it forward any)! I have plenty of room for the pusher fan setup. There is almost enough room to run a thin puller fan if I wanted to! There is a full 2" of clearance between my radiator and the exhaust housing of the turbo.

-Jon plumbed the wastegate in a position where it didn't take up any "extra" room in the engine bay. It's mounted between the downpipe and right side crossover and runs nicely back into the downpipe.

-Plug access! This was one of our main concerns at the start, specifically on the drivers side. After 4 "revisions" to the drivers side header (most people wouldn't put that much effort in), he was able to provide me with headers that have plenty of plug access. In fact, I can do all the plugs from the top of the car in less than 20 minutes (both sides)!

I've seen quite a few "professional" LT1/LS1 turbo fabrications over the years. All but a couple of them were sub-par in my opinion. Jon (although he humbly admits to being an "amateur" ) has really developed his skills over the years helping us LT1 guys with turbo kits. In fact, I am confident enough to say now that I highly doubt I would be able to have executed a setup like this with a "professional" fabricator for any reasonable amount of money. Even then, I have seen significantly worse fabrication skills with some of these "professionals".

Jon, thanks buddy for all the help on this!!!

Re: Turbo Build For Jason Short

Jason,

I'm hoping I have a potential buyer for my setup now. 5500 shipped is what I'm lookin for it and I'm even throwing in the LT's & y-pipe at no extra charge!

Jon has done some fabulous work on your setup. I've been going back and forth on single vs twins. Thinking twins just for symetry but I like the fact you've got great plug access. That's a requirement I must have along w/ using precision turbos. The fact he's willing to go above and beyond for a customer is cool as hell. I really hope I can pull this off and get it sold but if not I'll just enjoy it as it stands.

Are you going to run an eboost controller?

Thanks for the words Jason!

Jason just emailed 30 pics of the kit installed in the car, I am downloading now and will upload in a few.

Looks like art made out of plumbing guys<Dave claps loudly> Love the welding quality as much as the routing. I'd love to see a machine that could duplicate that setup. It would only cost a million dollars or so
Nothing like the mind and determination, eh? Great work gents.

Looking forward to seeing it on the streets Jason When do you anticipate in being on the road?

Beautiful work. Makes me want to sell my procharger as well. Interested on how much this whole setup would run.
