When I did the automatic thing, I looked into a lockup setup. No one, including PI, would even claim that their lockup converter would stand up to 1,000+ hp. PI did say that their 5-disc setup might be up to the job, but it didn't sound like they had even tested on something as powerful and heavy as a 4,000lb car with 1,000+hp.
We are in a situation now where engine builders are out ahead of tranny builders. As far as automatics go, the PG is the easiest tranny out there to build up handle mega hp, even in a heavy car. But a PG with the needed loose converter in a car intended for some street as well as strip duty would be a complete PITA. A TH400 can be built strong enough as well. But the lack of OD is still an issue as is the lack of a lockup converter solution.
As far as manny trannys go, a fully built up T56 by G-force is probably the best solution. Costs about $5K and to that you must add add another $1K+ for a clutch. If I were still after a street/strip solution I would either do that or try the Lenco route that I have posted about. The Lenco would be megabucks, however.
The best auto option might be a built 4L80E. If you do a search you can follow the path taken to get there. Or, one could go the TH400+GV OD route. Expensive and heavy, but it would do the trick.
