Solid roller for an LT1

I'm new to the list and had a cam question:

I am currently running a comp 306 and want to switch to a cam thats blower friendly and in a solid roller as long as I'm upgrading. I have seen several threads on cams but haven't seen any on solid rollers for the LT1's. Just wanted an idea of what grinds to check out. Thanks Steve

I think you'll find that solid rollers are pretty uncommon with this crowd. Mainly because 650++ rwhp can be done with a relatively mild camshaft (210-230 IN duration at 0.050 lift, 10-12 degrees more on the EX, 112-116 LSA) while spinning relatively low rpms (6000-6600).

You can check with:

COMP
Combination Motorsports
Speed INC
Thunder Racing

That's just my take on it.

solid rollers are a benift because you can run some extreme steep lobes. they do this via the solid lifter obviously and the very high spring seat pressures. This allows for near 10,000 rpm valve trains. Now, most of us here keep it under 7,000 if not under 6,000 rpm. The FI is our primary power adder thus a solid roller with all the hassels( i ran one for over a year...yuk..) are not worth it.

There would be very little reason to go with a SR on a street or street/strip FI LT1. If it's under 7,000rpm, don't even think about it. A max effort race motor operating at >7K rpm would be where you would see some benefit.

If you go with a solid roller you are going to constantly be re-adjusting your valves. Plus like they all said^^^ unless your going to be reving it to the sky you really don't need it, plus i like to think of hydraulic rollers as a saftey feature being that if you do over rev it the lifters will go flat and give you time to back off the throttle before you blow it. Just my opinion though.

Re: Solid roller for an LT1

Thanks for the input. I didn't really care about going with a solid roller. I just thought while I was switching out my cam from the non blower friendly comp 306 I would upgrade to the solid roller. Mainly the reason I was thinking solid roller is that they don't float out as easy up in the RPM's. I didn't even want to go bigger just something more blower oriented. Can you guys recommend a hydralic cam then about the same lift. I shift at about 6200 and I'm right on the edge of cutting into the 10's. So I wanted to upgrade the opti because mine is the original one on the car with 96k on it. I'm also going to switch to an electric water pump. Since I'm going to have most of the front off I thought I would install a new cam to maximize boost. Thanks

Stock LT1 springs have like 75#/150# seat pressure seat and open respectively.
solid roller springs i had were 450/660
Get your self some comp cams "R" lifters and some cc977 springs. i have these, a cam with .615 lift. the springs have about 380/470 closed and open seat pressure.

I specced out that cam years ago and have used it in my own car and a number of others. Works great, OEM lifters are fine.

That looks like a good grind and it's bigger than my comp 306 by a little. Currently I am running oem lifters because at the time I put this cam in comp was having problems with the comp R's. I'm not sure how they are now...this was a few years ago when they were new.

It has more lift but that's it. That cam (214-224) will have a ton better street manners than a CC306. You probabally wont even hear much of a lope with a good tune.

Camaross....since you have had both what differences did you see in track performance and power. My road runner was down so it took me a couple days to reply. Do you have a link to your video clips?

well this one has about 200+ more power then the cc306 maybe that has to do with the blower tho...

i like the grind listed about alot. great lope, great power, but from a driveablitly standpoint, you would thinks its stock.
I will upload the video of the cam lope lata today if possible and post a link for yah
