SC a 3.8, what can it do stock?

I was talking to some girl in one of my college classes....she said her BF has his 98 bird in the shop getting a SC put on, that he's expecting 100% more power.

Is that doable on a completely stock car? I mean...will that shortblock survive on a daily basis? And it won't hit 400HP w/o some major intercooling/boost right (10-14PSI)? My buddy has a v6 maro and wants to do this as well.

Seems like an awful lot of money to make that happen, 3-5k for the SC/cooler, not to mention any mods to the shortblock that would be required to have any confidence and durability...that sounds like a 7500$ job...considering a shops doing it...that must be pretty hefty unless you know someone...just wondering....cause I wanna run that guy, hehe...

the normally aspirated 3800 motor doesnt have the same forged bottom end that the supercharged version in the GTP and bonneville has, so it wont take nearly as much power. to give you an idea, with the roots style blower, the GTP guys are somewhat hard pressed to get to 300whp, even with a different blower snout and accompanying small pulley (14-15psi) exhaust work, and other small items, so I dont think he'll be getting the 400hp he's hoping for, at least not for long, cause it'll let go at those lofty boost levels, that it cant hold (like the GTP motors). With 6-8 psi, which I think is what pulleys those kits come with, he might see 275-300 flywheel horsepower, maybe a tad more, but not 400hp.

i would say that running a 3.8 forced induction setup at 7psi you could pull 380 fly wheel hp. normally with the turbo setups that we do on stock engines and 7psi you just take the litre of the engine and multiply it by 100, and that gives you a pretty good idea of what your flywheel hp will be. hope this helps.

that 380HP is factoring in an intercooler right?

of course, all of our kits come with ceramic coated headers, downpipe, and turbo housings... and of course our own special intercooler, it's a tad bit different than any other cooler on the market.

If I thought putting a S/C on a 3.8 would make 400hp, I would have already done it to my '01 Monte Carlo SS. I had a modified '98 GTP that didn't put down those kind of numbers.

If this guy's car makes 400hp - it will only do it once! Then....BOOM!!!
