Roots SC on LT1

Why not a roots style SC on the LT1? I've seen some pics of this type of SC on LS1 Vettes and now the Cobra has a similar setup. Aren't reliablity and packaging supposed to be great with this typr of SC, especially if big boost is not what you are aiming for? Just curious about the possibilities,

Kyle

for stock applications the compression is to high, so much boost so low that it blows a headgasket. Whipple worked on one but canned it due to this reason, they even had a part number. They said the price charged wouldn't be justification for the horspower and low boost. Check out Roosters thread in advance section under, How to cut an intake in half, hes installing one on his car. I myself would love one, we'll see how his goes first.

Well i dont see why you would want a roots and dont say low end torque. If your on street tires/drag radials the low end torque will be worthless. They produce higher intake temps. Inner cooler issues. Boost limited compared ATI/VTEC. I would not say a roots is any more reliable either. If Ford was not a 6 dollar stock maybe the could have afford to put a real blower on their Cobra and not a freaking heat pump. Why did they do this because roots blowers are cheap $$$. Magna charger makes one i think.

The eatons are probally the most reliable blower aviable. They are rated for over 100k miles before the first oil change.

you can't find anthor blower like that.

Low end torque useless? Sounds like thats coming from someone with a useless suspension/tire combo.. Shouldn't be driving like that on the STREET anyway. Take it to the track

Oh and I believe there are some lighting guys runing like over 15psi (I heard of one running 18) ...... Quite a bit more than the usual centrifical kit.

Heat pump? Do you know what happens when you compress air? YOU GET HEAT!

Yes but some have different adiabatic efficiencies...

That is the gig..

I'm hoping to follow Rooster's footsteps and make an intercooled version of his homeade Eaton LT1 setup. I'm waiting for status on this from him and my annual bonus check.

Since I have more hood room I'm planning on using the entire Lightning blower/uppermanifold setup. I'll make an adapter to put an LT1 TB on it instead of the Ford piece. We'll see if it works out

Rooster, do you have any pics or can you send me some info on what you have going on? Thanks,

Right just cause you have high hp you have to go to a track. Most people are idiots with high hp/speed cars and blow it. Can you hit a 500 hp car in the street yes for long no. Im sorry i did not spend 8k on my motor to use it at the track only( hence daily driver). I still dont want big low end torque with my tranny/rear. Most people dont want to spenk 2k on a rear then 4k for th400GV. If i did i could have built my motor around that area, but then you break everything with traction. So yes a roots would be nice 1/8 mile machine.

The lighting guys run 15psi on a totaly dif motor. Ford made that 5.4 for boost not high compression. You can buy m series blowers for nothing. What centrifical kit are you talking about a PD/a trim/600 b??? The best KB kit makes what psi 22 and can u run that type of psi with out detonation due to a intake mount blower? Do you know what happens when you compress air from the intake?

OK I don't know why you guys could debate this, both chargers are great, but they are designed for two different applications. A roots is better for the street, because it has boost at all RPMs(2000-up) a centrifugal doesn't start to make boost usually until 3000 RPM(unless your pushing major boost) and then its not maxed out. I'm sure you know that turbos are best out of al forced induction, and yes they build great amounts of low end torque. Most people say they love our big engines because of all the low end torque, if you've ever drove a high horsepower 4 cylinder, you would notice a big difference in the way it feels compared to our rides. If low end torque is so bad, maybe GM should just can all big block engines. You say that Ford engines are made to handle those blowers. Well your right, they came from the factory that way, our cars didn't, and as far as I'm concerned no matter what blower you use its gonna blow our engines sooner than later, because they weren't designed with low compression forged pistons and such. The M112 was not soley desgined for the Ford engine. You say you must upgrade to a better rear end with a roots, well any forced induction is gonna need one if you want to go fast, I don't even have one and I can't get any traction until 2nd gear, looks I could use a 12 bolt also. When I drive on the street I and want to get pushed back, I'll usually pull the engine to about 4000-4500 RPM, sure higher is more power, but I want nice smooth instant power without having to rev to the sky, so a better street driven power adder is gonna be a roots type. Don't forget, these units from Eaton are made much better and have better efficiency than you believe. Like Rooster said 100,000 miles before oil change, show me a centrifugal that does that, also like he said with ay compressed air your gonna see heat, the Lysolm designed blowers are supposed to have better efficiency than centrafugal, and very high boost. Also notice that Rooster will have a supercharger setup for around 1000 dollars, guess that extra 2000 grand that he could have put towards a centrafugal kit can now be put towards a new rear end. So I can't see your arguement holding up. I'm not trying to start a little war over this, just doesn't seem like your statements are valid enough against a roots type blower!

The great thing about the roots S/C on the Impala is I will have all the boost and low end torque I can handle. Once I do the S/C I will start looking into a 2nd short block so I can build a nice low compression 355.. O-ring the heads and a ton of nitrous and I just have a pretty cool car.

The only problem I see with a Roots setup on a LT1 is extreme amount of boost starting and continueing peak torque. This is a recipe for breaking stuff (bottom end)

I'm not too far off from having mine finished. The intake has the new bosses drilled and the upper plate welded. I'm waiting for my vacation to take the stock intake off and throwing this one on.

I'll need a FMU (I run speed-density. In my opinon impossible to tune with 1 bar factory computer, no reference delta boost). anthor idler (not tentioner) and upper intake for a stock lightning.

I got a ignition setup and spare set of fuel rails and larger injectors.

This blower is supposed to make like 6-8 lbs on the Ford 5.4L with the stock pulleys and I've seen them run up to 15psi+

The 5.4L is not built for boost for the first guy who mentioned it. The low compression pistons are!

I would like to see a roots type like that for 1k installed... Not going to happen. Im sorry...

the other 2k will go to making the kit work on the car.

I think i've got $627 in it right now..

We will see. Its looking promising.

Heres what I'll need still

FMU
Lightning upper elbow
Bypass valve vaccum actuator (cheap!)
Hood
idler (might just turn one)

Thats really all i can think of. besides a rebuild soon after

Most of the stuff i've used has been things i've pick up off other cars or found around the shop.. Ie injectors/aluminum/intake/etc...
