Rear mounted turbo?
Rear mounted turbo?
Mecham peformance had a Chevy Truck at SEMA with a turbo mounted by the rear axle. The kit came from STS. Dennis Mecham and an STS engineer were standing there and I spoke to them about it. The turbo drew air from a K/N cone clamped directly to the turbo and pumped the intake charge under the the truck and up to the throttle body. They said this eliminated the need for an intercooler because the air cools on the long trip to the TB. I'm sure the underhood heat would be lower as well with no turbo in there.
This makes a turbo retofit much easier I think. No crazy turbo headers or downpipes, less space restrictions in the tight engine bay, less crazy bends for the ducting, etc.
I did suggest a mesh shield around the turbo setup underneath the truck, they seemed to think it was a good idea.
What do you guys think?

There's a 20 page thread about this already. Try reading through some of it, but I wouldn't bother with most of it past page 15. It's just people either bashing the kit or doubting the certain aspects of it work.
I looked over that thread. I have been looking into a custom turbo set-up for the winter on my V-6. With this rear-mounted set-up, is there a way to fit a muffler of some type in there somewhere. Emissions here require a muffler of some type. Or would this be completley and entirely not even possible to do for emissions? If I do go with something like this, it will make it so much cheaper and easier to do! No y-pipe or anything, but I am afraid it isnt possible emissions wise. Maybe I will register out of county..? the v6 is a 3.4l and I was thinking a t3/t4 would be a perfect size turbo, get a nice sized wastegate, figure out the plumbing somehow. Im no turbo expert by any means, or car expert, but I am trying to learn as much as I can. So would any of this be possible? I really hope so, because a convential set-up looks too tough, but if thats the only way, Im all for it. Thanks for any help

You could probably fit a bullet muffler in there if you had to. Considering that it supposedly only takes a few hours to install, you could probably take it off for emissions testing, and reinstall it afterwards.
