Rear mount turbo

I have been researching rear mount turbos lately and am trying to piece together a kit since I already have the turbo that I need. My question is, do you have to use an electric oil pump to get oil to the turbo or can it just be a gravity fed system? And if I do need the pump then where could I possibly find one? I was told by Majestic turbo in Waco,Tx that I did need a pump, however, when I started to look at the kits on the internet, I cannot find one that has the pump. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks alot - Cameron

Re: Rear mount turbo

I would think U need a sump and a pump to get all that oil back to the motor

Or just put the turbo up front like a normal person that doesnt have a rear mounted engine

Yes you need a pump....gravity only works one way

As for getting one, km9v posted a link to Squires website, they should be able to help you.

Re: Rear mount turbo

The engine forces the oil the turbo and a pump on the return side will push it back.

Yep. Rear mount will always be a step behind front mount (no pun intended). Didn't he use Nitrous to get in the 7's anyway? The 6 second front-mount guys are doing it without Nitrous.

What, exactly, is "full boost"? You DO realize that very, very few people run turbo's at "full boost". To me, that means blocking off the wastegate and letting the turbo do whatever it will. With large turbo's on small motors, that might mean 30, 40, or even 50 psi.

It's physics buddy, given two equal turbos, the rear mount will have more lag, and will be less efficient. There is something to be said for the cooler air temps though, and its a great idea in theory.

Re: Rear mount turbo

seems too me like most of the people that actually OWN a rear mount set up like it.. i think these systems have there place and i think they are very much capible of making good power and showing it.. but i think its critical that they are set up properly, not everyone that wants a turbo set up can afford too drop 5-7k in a good conventional mount set up. i think these are great budget minded street turbo set ups that are more than capable

Re: Rear mount turbo

Front mount turbo will always the better. I chose rear mount for the following reasons.

Pro:
1) it is easier to build and not required to cut up the engine bay
2) It is cheaper to build.
3) Keep the nice cold a/c
4) Can make good hp

Con

1) Obviously will be more lag than front mount turbo

My rear mount turbo make full boost at exactly 4000rpm. This is with 1.18 a/r turbine housing on 383ci LT1 vette.
