Radiator relocation for turbo car

I originally modified the lower core support to fit my radiator in (only way to fit the twins in). I cut all that out this weekend and redid it this way (how I should've done it to begin with).

http://www.quarter-mile.net/TA/radiator.htm

The radiator is an AFCO (#80133N). I used 1/4" plate (approx. 4"x6") to close off the ends of the upper core that I cut out. The new crossbar is 3/8" x 4" mild steel and it's approx. 30" long. The lower core support is made from 1/4" plate (sides) and a pair of 2" angle buttwelded together (3.5" i.d.). The lower core now sits about and inch or so HIGHER than the factory setup. I had to buy a remote filler neck (Moroso #63730) and I'm using a Moroso puke can (#63657) that is mounted to the passenger side frame rail between the radiator and intercooler. I also have a pair of Flex-A-Lite Trimline fans (#114) pushing through the radiator.

I'm also in the process of converting all the hoses over to braided line/AN fittings and mounting my oil cooler somewhere on the front of the car. For all the stuff I've cut out, I'm finally running out of room.

The best thing was the cost of this. The gas and wire I used probably cost more than the metal (I've got way too much laying around). The radiator is $250 retail through AFCO, the puke can is $30 at best and the filler neck is like $20. The braided line and large fittings are gonna kick me in the ***, but I'd rather spend the money now rather than blow a hose at a 1000'. Until I get the radiator back, I'm working on making some nice travel limiters for the front suspension and modifying my fuel lines (again). I took 3' of excess line out of them last week.

Whats the ground clearance with the rad mounted upand down? I take it thats why your making suspension limiters?

looks good.. i picked up a griffin rad. for mine cut the upper support out and I got to modify the bottom support for it to sit a bit lower.

i would think hes doing the travel limiters up front to keep the front on the ground or closer to it on launch and saving the back bumper.

Ding ding ding. The intention is to run the car in drag radial classes.

I'll have to take a measurement to see what it's at now. Based on my backwards *** math, it should be almost where the stock one sat (dropped the lower support 3-4" on the first attempt, then raised it back up 3" this time)

What fans are you running (I think I asked this in the past already but forgot) and how is the cooling on the street? Any problems?

Re: Radiator relocation for turbo car

The fans are Flex-A-Lite 14" Trimlines. I haven't had a chance to cruise the car around on the street (barely have any interior in it), but I don't see it being a big problem. I had some problems w/ it running hot on a few blasts I made on the road by my house, but after finding out that I only had the passenger side fan hooked up (DOH!!), I'm not too worried now. I'm starting to think it's time to rip all the stock wiring out and wire the car from the ground up again. Too much **** not being used that's just in the way.

Re: Radiator relocation for turbo car

I am in the process of doing this to my car thanks to mongse's information he gave me earlier (thanks again). We are just about to finish up the lower bracket. For the upper we welded studs through the factory radiator support and made a formed brace that is now removable for easier engine removal. Turned out to be very rigid. The lower is pretty beefy, it might be a hair too low but for my purposes it should work nicely. I will try to get some pics up next week.

No problem. I want to see the pictures of what you did. There's no idea that can't be improved on, even the wheel (which I'll post about that next week ).

I tacked a piece of rollbar tubing in between the frame rails and then put a come-along on the bracket for the hood bumpers. The rails weren't going anywhere.

If you don't do this, they will distort. May not be much, but it will move.
