Powerdyne question
I am looking into getting the powerdyne 6# supercharger for my 95 Z28.Right now my mods are 52mm throttlebody 160 thermostat with hpp111 programmer. My question is do you guys think this would be good enough to get me to around 450 horsepower and mid to low 12s 1/4 times. If not what else would you guys recommend me adding with the kit to help out.

I was trying to stay in a budget on the price thats why I was going to go with the powerdyne kit.I was hoping with that kit and a few other mods that I could be where I would like to be.What do you think. Is it possible for me to get there with the powerdyne kit or not. Thanks for the help.
Re: Powerdyne question
Not with a 6# pulley and a powerdyne. And anymore than 6# w/o an intercooler will grenade your stock pistons from what I hear. Do a search for powerdyne in FI section. We just had a decent thread where a lot of powerdyne users chimed in. Basically if you intercool the powerdyne and go with a 9# pulley and swap a blower cam into your car, you may hit your goal, but theres also the chance you'll blow the pistons since it will be running on the ragged edge and if you get any kind of detonation youre done. If you look into a water/alky injection on top of the intercooler you wont have to worry about detonation, but personally I wouldnt go 9# unless you have $$ to replace the engine with a forged setup when you do blow holes in your pistons or break the ring lands. The stock bottom can only take so much abuse, mainly the pistons weren't engineered for that kind of stress.
Re: Powerdyne question
any FI LT1 will not make it too long at 450hp. The strongest rods in ever put into an lt1 are the powered metal ones and they are rated at 450hp. Not to say that all people who will make 450rwhp will throw a rod, because many people don't. But you would be right there, the blowers guys are the ones who are all members of the "club". I'm not sure if that is in your plans?

Re: Powerdyne question
Something to think about. Is your goal really 450 HP, or is it mid to low 12's? Mid to low 12's does not require 450 HP. You did not say what transmission you have, but if you have an A4, mid 12's can be done very easily without the blower, or with it at low (reliable) boost levels. My own experience with the PD is that it will physically flow enough air for around 500 hp with the right pullies and good heads, but that's all. It is definitely a cork beyond that, but if you have no intention of going above 450, it will do it.
The main deficency with using blowers on stock shortblocks is ring end gap. My factory shortblock had top ring end gaps of .010" to .012" when I took it apart and checked it. No piston material available will keep the ring lands on the pistons with a gap like that under boost. That is what fails the stock pistons IMO. Intercooled systems can buy you a little room in this regard, but it's really just a crapshoot. If your motor has tight gaps on the rings, it will break the pistons, if not, it will probably work.
As stated above, you would want to retune, and pull timing if you decide to try it. Should you decide to risk it, do so with the reasonable expectation that you might be facing a rebuild.
Heads / cam will be all over a mid twelve with ease, and reliability. I ran 12.5 @ 115 with good heads, and a mild HR cam on the stock SB on street radials prior to rebuilding the engine, and putting on the PD.
I actually consider myself fortunate to have not broken mine. I failed an iron valve guide which put metal debris in the motor. It was because of that, that I decided to freshen the engine just to clean it properly. That's how I found out about the end gaps. Had I not done that, and subsequently installed the blower, I am certain I would be on the list of guys complaining about stock shortblocks.

Re: Powerdyne question
It all depends on what location your in (as in what altitude). If your at sea level or close to it, you could hit mid or low 12's with bolt on's. If your at altitude like me for instance (5300ft), theres no way in hell you'll hit mid to low 12's without a power adder assuming your running your stock LT1. You would need to run a stroker setup for that. Like stated above, it depends on if you want 450hp all the time and hit low 12's or you just wanna hit low 12's no matter what it takes. If the latter is the case, spend a grand on a nice complete nitrous setup, the better part of a saturday for install and enjoy the 12's.

Re: Powerdyne question
I took my car to a high performance engine builder and he said that the motor would be able to handle 6psi of boost with no problem with the right tune. The horsepower sounds nice but I would like to be in the mid to low 12s dosent really matter to me what the horse is to get me there.I want to do it without the help of the bottle though.I can do it a number of ways though.I can go with heads and a cam or a blower.I was wondering what you guys think would be the best way to acheive this. Thanks for the help.

Re: Powerdyne question
Mine runs mid 12's on motor with mods in my sig. Those #'s were on a 90 deg. day here in Illinois. What you are looking for is very possible with a Powerdyne. I think what others were saying is you could get more power with all the same mods with a better blower.Personally I will never get another Powerdyne. The power output is just not there and it creates alot of heat. My air intake temp is over 220 deg.

2- That is what the NOS is for.
Alot cheaper than trying to fab up an intercooler. NOS was on the car when I bought it. I drive it every day and has plenty of power for everyday driving. The "NOS intercooling" works fine @ the track the little I took it. Went from 12.5 to 11.6 with a dry 75 shot at 3-4 psi. And from what I have researched, 6lb pulley on stock pistons etc. = BOOM!!
