lowering compression

i was told i should replace the headgaskets before i put the turbo on since i already have to take the intake manifold off to fix the oil leak. then i was thinking if i used some thinker head gaskets and while the heads are off have the combustion chambers opened up a little. would this be worth the time/effort in lowering the compression enough to help prolong the stock short block? ill only be running 5psi and with it a FMIC. any thoughts would be greatly appriciated.

If your only running 5 psi, I wouldn't bother. Especially if your only reason is to prolong the stock block. 5 psi really isn't much of a push for a stock bottom end.

Re: lowering compression

ya, but everyone is telling me once i get a little bit of boost ill just want more, so if i get dumb and push it up to 7 or 8 it might help save it for a while. i would like to think i would be able to resist the urge to turn it up, but i dont know.

Re: lowering compression

I was running 8 psi for like a year with no issues related to head gaskets. I recently turned the boost down to 6 psi because the stock valve springs can't keep up. I do agree though, once you feel the 5 psi, you're gonna throw that intercooler on, and turn up the boost!

Re: lowering compression

I really don't think grinding in the chamber is an effective way to lower compression. Lots of grinding will take very few cc's off the chamber.

what about the head gaskets? i didnt think they could lower compression to much but i was told they would and it would be better to change the head gaskets first anyways. cars got 64xxx miles on it well kept.

Re: lowering compression

That's not a good method either. Thicker head gaskets mess up the quench height and could actually lead to increased risk of detonation.
